I started drawing my Cubeboy character about 25 years ago, and have always dreamed about putting him in a video game. So I want to entertain this idea of mine from 25 years ago, but will probably need a ton of help along the way. Here's my game plan, and I'm breaking it up into five phases.
Phase 1: Create art for the NES using graph paper. I would originally start with just Cubeboy, and add more characters eventually.
Phase 2: Import the Cubeboy character into Mega Man 3 (or one of the other Mega Man games if easier) using a tool to import sprites and replace Mega Man with Cubeboy
Phase 3: Create more art using other "characters" I have drawn/will draw.
Phase 4: Import additional characters into the same game as boss characters.
Phase 5: Design my own game from scratch.
So my first set of questions.
1) What is the "square" pixel size of the Mega Man character? I'd like to use those restrictions when making the Cubeboy art on graphing paper.
2) How many frames should I draw for:
a) Running
b) Jumping
c) Shooting
3) Is Mega Man's hit box the same as the square pixel size, or is the NES smart enough to "guess" where his actual art is for hit detection?
I know I can search for the information on the internet, but I'm hoping that asking direct questions and getting direct answers will motivate me to actually follow through. I'm confident that I have the drive to complete phases 1-3, even though it will probably take a long time to complete. I'm not so sure that I have the time/skills to ever get to phase 5, but would love if I could actually come through.
My background is that I've take intro programming classes in Java and VBA. I have also self taught myself in the very very basics of C++. I also have a math major, so I think I'm capable of learning the programming side for phase 5, but would probably need a LOT of hand holding if I ever get to that phase.
