1. What is the process called converting HDL into a [programming file] for, say, a CPLD? [To avoid the "compile/assemble" argument, and "to know the right question to ask"] It's been forever since I actually used such software (which is, iirc, a "simulator"? Again, I do not still "know the right question to ask" )
1b. Do people around here have a preferred FOSS simulator[or correct word]?
2. I have read around here that some CF cards, card-read/writers do not play nice with the PowerPak. So, is there a good one of each you can recommend, that would be compatible with Linux? (I use Ubuntu 12.04LTS atm. It's not the best.)
3. Speaking of such, is there a good hex-editor around? The ones I've tried (GHex, Bless, Tweak) have each had significant issues. GHex can't cut-and-paste correctly, Bless has issues with insert, and I managed to crash Tweak in read-only mode. I must be missing something significant, as it seems like this would be a low-enough-level program that a good one has existed forever somewhere and I am not asking the right questions.
4. Less importantly, a FOSS circuit layout tool? (I think I heard Eagle mentioned?)
