Why is this resistor on the carts? I'm making my own cart and I'm using the MAX795 ic for battery control. I'm wondering if I need that resistor too or not....

IIRC, the resistor was in series with the battery. I assume it's there to reduce transient current consumption on switchover, since 1k is much too small to help prevent charging the battery through the diodes.
Right, it's in series. And I'm referring to the circuit with a mad1 ic.
So is it good practice to do this on all battery backup circuits? In other words, do I need to add that to my design?
I don't know if it's best practice in general, but since you're using MAX795, you should hook it up however Maxim recommended in the datasheet or application note for that part.
