Hello,
I'm thinking about purchasing one of these Game Doctor floppy disc copying devices, mainly for playing translated SNES roms, and as a collectors item.
There are 3 available, which are Game Doctor 3,6,7 and one more called UFO Super Drive Pro 7.
They all seem to be 32Mb and load from floppy discs.
I'm thinking the Game Doctor 7 is the best out of these, but I'm really trying to research this before I spend my money (they are around 100 with shipping). There seems to be quite a lack of good information out there on these devices, and the one document I have been looking for never seems to exist (the links for the txt file are always error 404).
If anyone have information on these that would be useful, please let me know. Thank you
Yeah, the SF7 is the best of that lot. $100 is a bit much. What do you want to know? Do you know about the Super EverDrive? Old copiers are now exclusively in the collector's realm since outside of Asia they can't be picked up cheaper than a flashcart.
If you want it as a collectors piece, that's cool. But if all you want to do is play translated ROMs on real hardware, a flash cart will be a much better option. Who wants to mess around with clunky floppy discs and dirty old floppy disc drives?

Which can fail at any time, 'cause those things aren't durable at all.
Are a Retrode (for dumping games) and SNES PowerPak/Super EverDrive (for playing the patched games) together cheaper than a floppy-based copier?
No. Considering you could get a GDSF3 pretty cheap, and a GDSF6 or GDSF7 for a bit more. The Retrode is rather expensive, and the flash carts aren't cheap either, even though they are much nicer to use than older copiers.
I've been tempted to got a floppy disk emulator like these:

Not sure if I'd want one just to use with a Game Doctor (I have an SF7, but I lucked out and got a CD-ROM interface with it), but I do have other floppy-equipped stuff that could benefit as well, like an Atari ST.
I have a GD SF7 128M RAM I am willing to get rid of.. Here's a pic, pm me for more details.. P.s you know it has a parallel port as well.
EDIT: several people are already interested!! so, I ask to name a price from $80-$120. Highest bidder will receive the unit + FREE shipping USA. International shipping will require a small fee.
Other items for Sale:
F2A Ultra 256M flash carts. $35
F2A Ultra 256M flash carts. $35
Super Magicom 16M (2 parallel ports, 1 to computer, other to disk) $35
Pass-Me $5
Gameboy Bridge - SOLD
Super Flash 64M Cart + Programmer - Not for Sale unless I can be convinced
With the Game Doctor SF6 and SF7, the Parallel Port is the ideal way to use it. It's cheaper than getting the CDROM hooked up. It's fast and more reliable than floppy disks when setup properly.
Thanks for all the information guys
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit which ucon64 and SNESTool do not like. I'm guessing I'm going to be using another computer that's 32-bit so I could use these tools right?
Also the flash carts seem to have the same amount of limitations, and I'm really wishing to play Star Ocean Translated (which I have seen many posts about), and I know that the GD7 does work with it.
Yeah the whole thing was around 70 USD and 24.xx USD and came out to about 100 CAD (since I'm Canadian), and since I don't seem to know too much about the value of these things, I figured that was a good price since I've seen these things go for a bit in the past.
Anyways thanks for all the information and quick responses
Well since you have it now be sure to put it to good use. I enjoyed my GDSF3 and GDSF7 prior to getting the SNES PowerPAK. I hope you aren't planning on loading Star Ocean off floppy disks. I think it would take something like 12 disks.
in regards to my SF7 for sale,
several people are interested in the unit, I'm asking to name a price from $80-$120. Highest bidder will receive the unit + FREE shipping USA. International shipping will require a small fee.
Also, my other units are for sale, except for the GB bridge. that's sold already. PM me for more info.

Yes, if you fit it with 96M of RAM. Assuming the SF7 you're considering has a single 32M card you'll need another 64M card will cost ~US$40. For that much you could purchase a PowerPak which will also play translated Star Ocean, and load the game from a CF card in a few seconds instead of minutes off of floppies or have to tether to a legacy computer.
Passmes are worthless now, nobody's going to play $5 for one of those. I have two of them sitting around, one is the original Passme, the other is a DS-sized card that worked with the DS Lite. Got that one because the R4 didn't yet exist.

ya i figured.. well i guess i have a xilinx chip to mess around with then lol
too bad the gb bridge is sold (seems you sold faster than you listed it) since I would have paid 200 for it. they are impossible. to find.
what kind of AC adapters can you used for these GD7's?
9-12V DC, negative center polarity, 850 mA and up. Ideally you want 9V so the regulator won't burn as hot.
I heard SNES AC adapters work well with them as well.
Only Japanese SNES AC adapters will work. US SNES has a weird tip. It won't fit a GDSF DC power socket. And Euro SNES adapters are AC and not DC which is totally unacceptable.
Sounds to me like a Sega Genesis model 1602 AC adapter (9V DC, 1.2 A, negative center polarity) would work fine. I use one with my AV Famicom (actually a 1602-1, which is 10V), which AFAIK used the same adapter as the SFC in Japan.
a sega genesis model 1 ac adapter seems to be the best ac adapter for powering most game copiers. I would suugest an official one rather than a 3rd party one.
I agree. The Sega Model 1 Power Adapter is excellent since it is compatible with alot of devices and it provides sufficient power with its max amp rating of 1.2amps.
Bazz I PM'd you for both F2A Ultra carts.
