So I was watching the GDC Postmortem (I hate that word) on Ms. Pac-Man (1hr 2min video), and found it very interesting how they actually constructed the board for the game.
The game remained a Pac-Man conversion kit to the very end, and uses all the Pac-Man roms and other hardware. Except when it fetches specific instruction bytes, then a Game Genie like system takes over and lets it jump to code on new rom chips.
They also put in all their protection hardware too.
