I'm only posting this because Celius made a reply to my mention in another thread and I didn't want to clutter that thread up further.
Contrary to what the image linked to states, it is not -idiotic- to write "it's" when you mean "its".
It's hyperbole, as "Bob the angry flower" implies. The essence of it is that "it's" ALWAYS means "it is", so if replacing "it's" with "it is" makes things sound funny, it's because they are.
"Its" goes along with "my", "his", and "her". Maybe it's forgotten because the difference is just an apostrophe, whereas for the others the spelling changes too:
