Hello all,
I don't know if anyone saw the update I made to the previous "compo" thread or not. I wanted to know who is working on an entry and some clarification on the rules, judging, etc...

Anyone?

I have a question about the (contest) legality of accessing char-rom. I want to implement pixel-perfect collision detection in my game. To do this the NES CPU needs access to the pixel placement in some of my sprites. Am I allowed to convert some of my sprites in char-rom to bit patterns in system ram (say to $0300)?
If not then fine. I'll just have to store the data twice, once in char-rom and once in prog-rom. It just seems weird to duplicate data...
I think the restriction about not reading data from CHR is a bunch of BS. I think it should just be "Fit whatever you can in 24k".
I'd be down with that I guess. Not like it matters to me.

I think it was to prevent people from going beyond SMB1's title screen and putting level maps and $#!+ in the CHR ROM.
I think that the restriction is a little hokey myself. However, I've already just coded what I need in PROG-ROM, so I won't be reading CHAR-ROM from the CPU.
I'm working on a game. This is my checklist
-hit detection between objects
-enemy behavior
-environment stuff
-win/loss checking
-sound engine
-better gfx (?)
What's done now
-character physics
-hit detection with playfield
-loading/displaying room
-scrolling from one room to next (This is a single-screen game)
-character animation, where applicable
It's been fun to work on but I'd feel more motivated with more entries.
I also don't get the restriction on reading chr-rom. The idea of a bunch of 24k games is pretty neat but the space allocation should be up to the programmer. If it was legal for commercial games it should be okay for us.
Yeah I think the CHR-ROM reading rule is pointless, too. It's something that is barely even useful, and data is data wherever it is. (edit: I guess the theory is to even the playing field for CHR-ROM/CHR-RAM, still not needed IMHO)
I'm thinking I might throw together an entry myself.. won't be anything great, just a simple idea I wanted to try a while back.
I need to make a website....and i'll possibly move it to early 2011 if everyone's ok with that.
I am really excited by my game entry. I don't want to ruin the surprise by telling anyone what it is yet. My game is coming along nicely though. I am on track to have it finished by 2010-12-31. The sound might need tweaking though.
I am 80% done with the main game engine. Then I need to spend some time on the title screen, 2-player mode, level-end scoring and other "polishing" elements.
I'm mostly excited because I've never taken a game project this close to completion before. My coworkers (that understand what I'm doing) and my wife think that my game looks really cool (for what it is).
