Welcome to tepples.
It's not complete without a referential hyperlink.
I might include a citation like that for several reasons.
- I might be citing the source for a claim that I feel someone else might challenge, a habit I picked up from Wikipedia and from an incident on forum.gbadev.org.
- I might be citing the definition of a specialized term whose meaning is not necessarily apparent from the individual words. For example, in this post, "expert system" has a specific meaning. By writing expert system, I'm saying "expert system as that article defines expert system". This is especially true of storytelling patterns, as one community cataloging all the storytelling patterns has developed a set of terminology that the public might not get.
- Or I might be striking a balance between the comedic principle of not explaining the joke with the risk that users might not get it. If you get it, great; you don't have to follow the citation. But if you don't, you can read the cited page and then reread my post with the cited page fresh in your mind, and when you hit the punchline, it'll suddenly make sense.
In any case, if you still don't understand a joke in one of my posts, I encourage you to send me a private message.
