This is a subject that has interested me for some time since I've made it common practice to expand NES ROMs and sometimes I would avoid expansion if there wasn't a physical board to support it. I believe that this might be a moot point with flash carts etc that emulate the original mapper, but can have ROM sizes larger than what's specified and still work on the NES.
Anyhow, the latest games I've come across are mapper 75 and those bandai mappers 16, 154, 159 etc
Now mapper 75 is capped at an unreasonable 128kb for the PRG-ROM, but I expanded the original ROM and had it tested on a Powerpak. The game ran fine from what I remember. Then there's the Bandai games which are capped at 256kb.
Anyway my question is to expand or not to expand? In most cases the games won't work in Nestopia, but emulator's and/or flash carts seems capable to playing them fine. Also is it possible to modify the original boards to support a larger PRG-ROM?
