I think it has to do with the difficulty of collecting too.
Anyone with a decent income can eventually complete a NES cart set. It may take a long time depending on how much expendable income you have, but it is certainly do able.
But even an infinite money supply would not guarantee you a factory sealed set. You'd still have to make plenty of contacts to track down rare games, or spend years and years and years hunting eBay.
Some people just enjoy the difficulty. Some people think Super Mario 3 is their favorite game, some people prefer Mega Mans. They are both excellent games, but Mario is a bit more forgiving than Mega Man.
