The LCD screen had a bunch of things going on, You could play a couple of mini games one wich would allow the user to adjust the autofire turbo function to a faster setting, the higher the score the faster the turbo. The other game was a drop n catch game for points.
Also with this controller you could store key touches for password games so lets say you had a 6 digit password 1S53BI You would but it on memory and then press Up or down depending on the code entry input so for example (if 1 was before A you would press down once to 1 and then hit store once that move was stored you would hit next for the next code charactor in the sequence. At least this is how I remember it working. "Memorizes "password" sequences" is what they called it.
It was way ahead of its time and pretty heavy and bulky but still pretty usable. As for its rarity I would say 5 maybe 6 out of the R1-R10 scale on games. I have seen quite a few of these for sale and in the wild they go anywere from 10-50 (if new).
Good luck it is with out a doubt probably the most sophisticated nes Peripheral made.
