How about the honor system and dont do it. What I do is never change powerups unless I get hit and it falls. And I keep moving. Once an enemy is done its done and I move on.

IMO regular point pressing should be fine - jumping on turtles, resetting enemies, etc.; same stuff as was allowed in the Mario 3 on NES contest. But the whole swapping between Fire Flower and Feather Cape for 1k a pop should be disallowed, as it seems to be an unintended effect of the inventory system - basically a glitch.

That's just my opinion of course.

I agree with the jumping on turtles being fine. I hop on turtles to get points, but I dont reset them and keep doing it. I just kill them all and keep moving. I dont agree with resetting

The game already takes 3-4 hours to beat normally with all exits. Having to reset and point farm is bullshit. It makes playing the game boring. Contests are supposed to be fun.

I got my score not even doing half the exits in the game. I farmed points as described on maybe 5 or so levels? The spots where you can really point farm like that are few and far between (at least of the levels I visited - I just wanted to beat the game, and point farmed whenever it made obvious sense to do so). Haven't played the game in years and it was a fun playthrough; that said, my score is my score as is and it'll be staying that way. I don't have time to play again.

Well point farming is lame. I thought that was never allowed. I went straight through the game not point farming at all. Just hitting the enemies on screen to maximize points when I could and moving on.

We are already on the honor system of not replaying a level or exit. You should kill an enemy once per exit run through. That should be part of the honor system. Id have to say I dont agree with the way you got your score. Frustrating when my run through a couple days ago was approaching your score in a legit fashion, not abusing a scoring system on multiple occasions.

I'd argue that point farming is not lame, and actually more difficult than just running through every level as you've done. It takes a higher level of accuracy by far, especially with the 1 life only rule. Also there's nothing at all that says it's not allowed by any stretch, the only rule being that you can only use each exit once, which makes sense, cuz otherwise I'd have submitted a 999,999,999 score by playing the same level over and over again, then beating the game. It gives us a chance to farm points per level and get a really high score, without the ability to take advantage of any one level in particular in order to avoid the harder levels.

The way you played sounds lame to me - zero thought or strategy put into it. Different strokes, bud!

SMB at the NES contest final last year would have been super lame if point farming wasn't allowed. There is a lot of strategy and thought into doing the point farming.
Now, the item switching score exploit shall be banned. It is too easy to use to accrue a huge score.

3-4 hours to get all exits? That seems like a lot

really hard to believe someone not owning these 2 titles though lol.
If someone is sad enough to cheat in one of these contest.... well, they probably need it more than me lol!

I think I might own 10 SNES games. I do have SMW but not LTTP.

100% agree with Skinny on this one.

Well, I don't see how I can make a ruling that doesn't upset someone.  And it's a shame it wasn't discovered until the final week, but that's just kind of how things go when a game is being played for the first time.  God know's the NES contest has dealt with this dozens of times

The item switching trick will be banned

Everything else is allowed

That's pretty close to how the NES SMB games are run, so I'm going with that.

While I understand your frustration quest, I have no doubt this will barely slow you down in earning a playoff spot for (what would of been) a third straight year

Thanks Gloves for discovering these and bringing them up for discussion

So is 470k second place after gloves? Don't feel like reading through the whole thread. Referring to super Mario world

I don't know about all this point farming stuff but I will say one thing about people playing on original hardware. For this thread, if I've got the game I'll more than likely play on my SNES unless it's a very long game (like A Link to the Past) where I just don't have time to play at home. For that one I actually went and bought it digitally for my 3DS so I could do it at work or while my daughter is in dance class, that kind of stuff. And it looks like playing that way won't even allow me to beat it... but at least I got some free time to play it on the go.

I've not seen anyone post a score higher than that aside from myself thus far.

Alright, well I'll post this now. I'm still playing but only have time to play while the woman gets her hair done. So probably still have a few hours

Quest claims to have gotten a score close to mine, but is yet to post a score, so we'll see if you can hold onto your place!

Well like I said, I only used 47 exits in total, so... lots of points still out there to be had! Someone could probably double my score if they put in the effort to do so.

I find playing levels fast gives a pretty good yield, it's time left*50 points. And getting dragon coins is great for getting points fast too. So you don't have to tediously bounce on shells and stuff all the time. Just playing well gets you plenty of points. I was only at the forth castle, had I not died I'm sure I could've gotten close to Gloves score

I'll be lucky to make it through the first level without dying, let alone the first world.

I can get through maybe three levels until I croak. I haven't played enough SMW to come close to no deathing it.

I'm looking forward to Super Punch-Out, a game that I can beat.

You guys are good. I tried playing SMW with point pressing and wasnt enjoying it. The game is just too large and I'm not good at SNES in general. I'd like to squeeze in a participation run where I just play the game legit/normally/whatever you wanna call it
