I ebayed a ROB robot NES original nintendo 8 bit two and a half years back as the one from when I was a kid was given away and is long gone.  Anyhow I am missing the claws.  Don't have them.  I saw your discussion in 2014 about 3D printering claws.  Looks like you can get 3D printered ones for cheap.  Not sure how good thw quality is but worth a try I guess.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-...

Anyone brave enought to try and see how good they are.

And also I probably don't need claws as he doesn open and close for some reason.  He goes up and down.  And side to side.  But does not open or close.  I saw the video and blog about fixing him.  But that only pertains to movig up and down.  Why won't my arms open or close?  Is tis an easy fix?

So how do you get the arms to open and close?

And are those 3D printered claws anygood?  Or is is better to just pay more and get a real pair?

I dont endorse fake things.

Arms open and close with the gear box inside the arm area. Something( A metal washer) is spinning freely of a gear and it needs to be stuck on that gear. Doesnt need to be spinning freely.

Up and Down is also dealt with in the gear arm box. Side to Side is in the Base gear box.

Its very hard to explain without photos and breakdown.

I used that video to start understanding things. The gear side closest to him controls the open and close I believe. The one on the other side (with the extra white gear on the axel) controls up and down.

Id suggest being very careful and picture things before you start so you know how the gears go back in if you cant remember

Look at this blog.

Blow up the photo with the yellow large rectangle and see the inside. Now can you point me to where the arm problem is?

I took a video. I opened it up and its a bunch of wires and crap. And was a paint to put back together as the gear and arms kept popping out. Even upside down. I don't know how the internals work. I will explain later about modding him. Not really a mod. Just some paper and tape to keep the claws shut and then poke a hole in the middle and place a pencil there. Then when you move down the pencil pushes the red button or the blue one. So he opens the pillars. So no need to open or close the arms. And no need to buy claws.  The pencil is taking the place of the gyro. flat eraser end down so you don't ruin the controller holder red and blue circles. A pencil is strong enough to push them down. The holder gadget is plastic and doesn't take a lot of force to push down.  Only issue is you can only do one at a time unlike with gyros as you have two.  But I might have an idea for that.

Then whats the point of the rob if it doesnt perform like its designed to?

A better fix is just pushing a and b on the controller yourself with the rob sitting next to you for moral support.

This!

AVGN also hacked and duck-taped two NES controllers together to play Gyromite...

Moral support is not worth the 36 dollars I paid. He better do something besides sit there and look good. I used to as a kid in the 80's use my feet with that red and blue thing to play the second controller. Or an nes advantage or camerica freedom stick with big buttons for the second controller. Or even better a camerica freedom connect (one with wires plugged in to second controller to make it woreless and right next to you. But my mod is still better. At least he does something. And no need to wait for gyros to charge. Just keep him fixed and then move up and down and walla.

Well eventually I am going to figure out how to make it so you don't have to keep adjusting him.  Keep him centered and maybe a folding plate or something.  Then only up and down.  No adjusting.  Just fold the plate up and down.  No other adjustments.

The video had a lot just to give you an idea.  But I will eventually finallize it so you don't have to do too much.

Lol. This thread made me laugh. Agree with quest4nes though. Whats the point. Just take the time and figure out how to fix him properly. I havnt opened one up, but if your having trouble.figurong out how he works, just google basic gearing principles. He cant be THAAAAAT advanced....hed 80's robotics tech.

The problem is the gearbox is probably shot. That means buying a new one or fixing it. And I am not good with soldering. So no thanks. And if its worn out gears. It didn't look like it. But if it is then he is another 100 to buy a new or used one on ebay. Nobody make new gears. So I have to ebay a whole new rob. So a slight mod is way cheaper. And way faster. Just up and down. No other waiting for gyros to spin or grab one.

The gear box isnt shot. The motors apparently still work. Gears just spin. A metal washer is not glued on the gear causing it to spin freely instead of as one unit together.

i fixed 8 or 9 robs that either didnt raise, spin, or open and close. No soldering required. you arent doing that kind of work to fix it.

Fixing robs isnt fun, but any reasonably intelligent person can easily figure it out. You rigged up this crazy setup so im sure you can figure it out by watching tutorials like the one i linked earlier

I'm thinking of modding my NES Advantage to control players 1 and 2 simultaneously. Should be easy to do. Get a spare CD 4021 chip, lift up the clock and data pins, solder on top of the old chip piggyback style, reroute the Player 2 clock and data wires to the piggybacked chip, then remove and jumper the player select switch. Then I can get double turtle power in games like Ninja Turtles II and play Gyromite to my heart's content without clunky Rob.
