Just curious, but is there a trick to safely defeating (or bypassing) the Red Arremers? Or are they there to destroy your armor, no questions asked?

That's a good question. You can defeat them, but it takes a few hits. Sometimes I can pass them without taking a hit, but most of the time, they're hitting me.

I believe there is a trick listed in a thread by MrMark, when he beat the game

The Red Arremer is the guy who appears halfway in level 1, right? If that's not his name, then I'm referring to that guy. I think he takes 5 hits to kill.

And I will never use the torch. It seems hardly useful.

I agree about the torch/fire. The thing I don't like about it is that it travels in an arc. It's about as useful as the rock in Friday the 13th

Except you can crouch and the rock will still hit in Friday the 13th. And it travels across the screen, not just a majority of it, which is more than what can be said about the torch. You only get 2 shots, and when they land, you have to wait for the flames to die out before you can even throw another one. The Dagger is arguably the best weapon.

Then again, you can thank Mirconics for that. They're the ones who made the port, and Capcom published it for them. Is it even possible to hack this game to run at 60FPS, or not?

The trick to the Red Aremers is to jump backwards and fire at them when they swoop in. Makes them a cinch since they can't get to you in time.

Edit: By jump backwards, I mean turn around in mid air and toss your weapon. I prefer the dagger.

I noticed that, but their patterns are erratic, not to mention how the game is almost Game & Watch like, since everything seems to pre predetermined. I guess I can always jump backwards, seeing as you aren't risking much if he's going flying down to the ground, then to swoop again.

Oh, come on, not the torch discussion again.
My scores were made solely using the torch.

Seriously the torch is terrible. I would love to know the right way to use it, it's always like i throw too many of them and then I cant throw it when I have to and it gets me killed.

That's sadly true. I have to kill some zombies at stage 1 with the javelin to get it, then kill stage 6 bosses with the cross and once again kill zombies to get the torch.
I wish I could just use it all through the game.

Not really, you just have to bait them into swooping. Once they do, jump away from them and turn around  in mid air and fire away. You should be able to take down each one with 1 or 2 jumps max.

This trick also works later on the bigger versions of the demons (forgot what they're called). It's best to practice on the 1-1 Aremer until you get it down pat.

Yup, a good night of sleep helped. This is a more acceptable score.
Overall, pretty bad score, but I can't do much more right now. I will improve this to an acceptable mark tomorrow evening.

Also, why do you hate me so much, GnG, why?

Three daggers when I am farming? That's not fair!

O hai Mark, I managed to get my score  60,600. I only made it as far as the first part of stage two, as currently I can't make the jump to get on land. I farmed killing Zombies at stage one until I had 30 seconds, enough to go the next screen, and farmed killing the ghosts till I had 15 seconds. Also, no 10,000 kings were found, and I didn't do the stage 2 exploit, as I don't know where the 1up is. However, I did get an extra life collecting the 5,000 item.

@Retro:  I got that down like a pro, thanks for the heads up!  This game is unforgiving, but you can beat it if you play it enough.  This is probably the first time I ever played this version, but I played this game about a dozen times.  Maybe tomorrow I can get a better score.  Am I allowed to do that, or this is my final submission?

Update:  My score is now 70,200.  Some progress is better than none.  Gonna try again now!

Update 2:  Two updates in a day?  I made significant progress with my score, and I didn't even get to stage 2!  My score is now 97,100!

Update 3:  This is my highest score yet, with some help from Bea.  Because of this, I feel like a cheater.  However, the torch is brilliant when trying to summon the mages, whereas the dagger will take a long time, probably even failing to spawn them.  Score is now 193,100.

Bea - you happen to be rather good at one of the toughest games ever...especially from using the shittiest weapon in the game (from what everyone says, I've never made it past the first few enemies of this game lol).

Whoever says the torch is the shittiest weapon in the game never tried to use the axe.
And seriously, for me the weapons tier is torch, shield, javelin, knife, axe.
I am so used with the torch that I simply can't hit anything with the knife. It moves too fast and has a really small collision box. I find it impossible to hit flying targets reliably with it.

Oh, no. Lol. I know I won't get the hiscore, but I'm definitely going to play again. As some of you may know, I recently beat this for the first time about a month ago. Might as well go again and see what happens.
