I don't remember actually. Is it just a rumored title or was it shown in magazines?

I think the current count is 67. That's a hell of a lot of NES games to have gotten canned. Man, we could have had over 700 licensed NES games...

I'm pretty sure the unreleased prototype was sold on eBay a while ago, I advertised it here for the seller.

Yeah, I remember that auction. It was a very wild one with some of the highest bids for a prototype.

Awesome thread, didn't Kung Fu II turn out to have a different title under a different system?

Edit: Now that I think about it I'm probably completely wrong

Famicom. The games were called Spartan X in Japan. The series was loosely based on a Jackie Chan movie called Wheels on Meals.

I'm intending this list to primarily be for unreleased games with a dump available online, or are confirmed to exist as a prototype. Rumored titles are not nearly as fun.

Crazy Land: Complete/Undumped
Hoppin' Mad: The unmodified rom is Incomplete/Undumped, the modded rom is Complete/Dumped

The Spy Vs Spy 2 rom that's out there is a translation, not a dump of a prototype. I have a prototype of that game though, so I would change the description to Complete/Undumped. I also have a complete copy of Robin Hood that included an in-glitched archery course, and it doesn't have the health bug issue of the known prototype. I can also confirm that Mini-Putt is complete, and my US prototype of Ufouria is incomplete. My Turrican prototype is complete but buggy.

I have some others like Ike Ike Hockey and Buggy Popper, but I don't know if I'd include those on your list.

Thanks Matt, list updated.

Is Crazy Land the earlier version of Trolls in Crazy Land? I remember reading the game changed publishers, which resulted in a change of content.

Crazy Land is a hybrid of sorts. Famicom got Crazy Land in Japanese, while the Euro market got Trolls in Crazy Land. The U.S. was going to get an English version of the Japanese iteration. It's basic the Japanese version with fully translated title and cut scenes. It's a pretty kickass game actually.

I'm still hoping for Erik the Viking to be found. We need more action-adventure games for the NES.

The only known one I haven't seen mentioned yet is Grid Grabber.

EDIT: Wait, is this list all the games that we know existed at one point, whether or not they've been found? If so it's missing a bunch, let me see if I can whip up that list.

I didn't spend too much time on this so I may have missed a couple, but here's a list of games that we have evidence existed and were playable at some point. Evidence is:

- Screenshots (I excluded any that were only represented by obvious mockups, some - particularly the Power Glove stuff - I couldn't tell so they remain)
- Known prototype cartridges
- Developer interview (public or private)
- Player recollection

Some of these are pretty nebulous. Son Son, for example, was shown off by Capcom early on as a potential NES release. It was probably literally a Famicom ROM burned on a cartridge to gauge interest at CES. Is that a prototype of an American game? Or is that just a copy of a Famicom game? Same with Holy Diver, and a few others.

I also left off a lot of Famicom games that were announced as having American localizations, I only included those that were either known to be playable at a public event aimed at American buyers, or those with screenshots that clearly show some change from the Japanese original (usually text).

I also left off unreleased Famicom games, because that is not my area of expertise. This is mostly American, with some arbritrary exceptions like Bridge (a Sachen game advertised in their NES materials) and Space Ace (only ever mentioned/shown in European press).

And some notes on the first post:

Since you're combining known protos that exist now and known games that existed at one point, your "incomplete/complete" definitions get hairy. For example, the review copies of Crash 'n the Boys Ice Challenge looked to have complete English translations, but the known protos of the games do not.

Cross Fire may not have ever been planned for the US, it might fall into that same nebulous category as Son Son in the previous post. It literally is the Famicom game, I dumped it. It was never announced as an upcoming game in the U.S. in any public event, nor was it ever covered by the video game media. Is a company burning its Japanese parent's games on a cart for evaluation an American prototype?

Corvette ZR-1 Challenge is was released with that name in Europe, and was released here as Race America. So the game itself is complete, but I can't speak to any prototype cartridges.

Dreamworld Pogie is very very incomplete, it's an Alpha at best.

I'm pretty sure there's only one Exerion US proto, and it's "Exerion II." Is there another one I don't know about?

Hero Quest PAL prototype seems complete, NTSC dump is not

Where is there a Kung Fu II dump? This is news to me!

We don't know that Legend of Robin Hood is complete, all we know is that the Nolan version doesn't have some of the egregious glitches that the dumped one does. Right? Or did I miss something?

Pescatore is a Famicom game, not an American NES game.
