I've never done one of these before, but just to make sure, are we only allowed one attempt, or can we try as many times as we like?

do we have to quit at life 0 because it doesn't give you enough time between game over and start screen? ran into that problem when my roomate and I were playing this for our personal game of the week.

You can pause it when qbert respawns on life 0, not game over screen.

You can try as many times as you like. And welcome! Nice to have you and other new players joining the competitions!

You can submit a score as many times throughout the week as you want.  The only thing I ask is that if you get a better score, you edit your original post with your new score.  It's easier for me when I tally up the scores at the end of the week if I don't have to go through 5 different scores by the same person.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Yes, you have to stop playing and take your picture as soon as you get to life 0.  I set up the rules this way for the reason you stated: It's too hard to capture a score after you lose your last life.

Throw a score up here if you get a chance, Mr Bimmy!

Hope to have another score or two up if I can beat my previous one.

Will give it a try this week.  I will be at my girlfriend's for the next day or two and have an NES there so I will be able to do a little gaming.  Unfortunately, I accidentally left Q-Bert at my house, so I may not be able to play it for a day or two.  Strider will be my game of choice tonight

Score update, check it out on the first page. I came soooo close to nabbing 30,000 points. Which is peanuts compared to some of these other scores, but it's my all time high score right now. I know I can surpass that mark. This game is frustrating, yet addictive. I love it. And damn you Snakey! Or whatever you call that purple snake! ^>^

The purple snake is Coily,The purple sideways guys are Ugg (the pig looking one) and Wrong Way. The green guys who change the blocks are Slick (with glasses) and Sam. Yeah...I played the arcade game too much back in the day. Lol.

I've never had this happen to me, but I know that it's a common problem among serious Q*Bert players.  Many people have tried to play the arcade game for the marathon record, but fail because their eyes start seeing the upside down board.  It usually happens around the 24-hour mark.  How much have you been playing, man?

It doesn't happen to everyone.  George Leutz set the arcade marathon record earlier this year.  He scored 37,163,080 points in a game that lasted over 84 hours!  The previous record was 33,273,520 by Rob Gerhardt, set way back in 1983.

it doesnt happen all the time, just some times...i actually start playing better when it happens too?!?!

as far as the George Leutz thing, i saw it live stream when it happened. I watched him break both the high score and the most time marks
Granted i didnt watch the whole thing or anything like that. But i def saw when he broke the score and the hour marks.

Actually, I "broke the news" to NA on that day in the official thread http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?StartRow=1&...

Matty, I love you, but you gotta take a break every once in a while

Also, I just thought of a nice tag line for the next Q-Bert contest:

"Q*Bert - the second most fun game you can play with one hand."

Save that in your notes folder, Bimmy!

Score updated! I have to say, thanks to coach Krunch and his nice tips I've become a bit better. ^>^ I made it to 3-2 before blundering my last 2 lives. I believe I can easily surpass my new high score too. This game keeps adding new twists with each new level. I'm really enjoying this game! ^>^

Thanks Krunch.
I decided to take the evening off and play more tomorrow

The best "tip" I can give is watch a few YouTube vids of good players to see their strategy, then attempt to incorporate what they do. It is MUCH easier said than done, but after watching some, and practice, I was able to incorporate a good deal of their stategy in my less-skilled-than-them self, and am getting a lot better!
