You watch stuff on your TV from 30 feet away? That seems insane!

I own Nintendo products because of Nintendo IPs. As long as Mario, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Zelda, and all of the offshoots of those games appear only on Nintendo systems, I will buy them.

Nintendo is not in trouble. Nintendo knows the power of their IPs and they know this will attract some third party developers. Not every system will be a winner, and it appears the Wii U will not do well. But, the Wii was a tremendous success, and the DS was/is the best selling video game system of all time. The Wii U may finish third among consoles, but the 3DS will finish a strong, dominant first in the handheld market.

That is why I don't worry about Nintendo at all. And if you paid attention to Nintendo's investor reports, sales data (current and historical), and considered the list of their IPs, you would't worry either.

How is the Wii U's name worse than "Xbox One"?

When you hear the term Xbox One, it makes you think someone is talking about the original Xbox. Not to mention the fact that it's commonly shortened to the "Xbone" which just sounds absolutely ridiculous.

284 inches away, which is a little over 23 and a half feet away. It's a 55", so it would be ridiculous to sit 10 feet away Plus, putting my couch in the middle of the room would make it seem much smaller and more cramped, IMO.

10' from a 55" doesn't seem bad, to me.
I thought the whole point of a giant TV was to emulate a cinema experience, which would require sitting close enough to have the screen dominate your vision.

Being in an older house, I don't even have any rooms where I even have 23' on the diagonal, so a veiwing distance like that seems outlandish to what I've become accustomed to.

Nintendo will do fine. As long as they keep releasing "limited edition" stuff and people snatch them up because they are "rare" they will stay in the market forever. Easy $$$$.

I am picturing a giant rock golem sitting down to watch a giant tv from a giant couch now.

My house does predate 1900, though that's when my house was split from my neighbors house and became a second property, so this could've been some historic mansion, or other, before it turned into what it is. My livingroom, diagonal, is about 26 - 28 feet (rough guess as the TV is diagonal from where I sit on the couch, and is diagonal in that corner) and in its entirety is about 290 sq feet.

You can picture the giant rock golem sitting on the floor with a bottle of vodka in 1 hand and the Guitar Hero 2 xplorer guitar, about 8 feet from the TV as I play Rockband tonight

So that's why you hate the WiiU!  The controller screen only 1' away must feel like it is inside your eyeballs

Haha, not at all! I don't hate the Wii U for that, I hate it because it's a Wii U

Give me an accurate controller that I can rely on and I'll consider buying Nintendo's next system. NES' controller is great. SNES' controller is fantastic. N64's controller was kind of a bust with the easy-to-wear-out joysticks, but Gamecube was great.

Then we get to the Wii. I know they're loved by many, but those wiimotes were a huge turnoff for me. Having a screen (which will just eventually break) for the WiiU controller adds nothing for me. I think some of us are just tired of Nintendo trying to be special at the expense of what we want. As a result I haven't gotten their console since Gamecube.

Make a solid, reliable, well-made, non-gimmicky product. ...THEN experiment with peripherals. Don't make the foundation of your platform an experiment.

Also this. I might not love Gamecube as much as the N64 but they had a nice controller...funny thing is whenever I see one used it's always broken vs the N64 controllers that you said have weak joysticks, but I always find them to be in good working shape. Odd...

But yeah the Wiimote sucks and that Wii U thingy that's the controller...I really don't know what Nintendo was thinking doing that. They should have stuck with the tried and true controllers. I mean look at Sony, they use the same basic controller for years, they add a few things but it's still the same shape.

Nintendo seems to be completely detached from what the modern mainstream gamer is looking for, and I really hope they stay that way... at this point, I don't particularly want to play another FPS or MMORPG. As long as Nintendo continues to focus on a more niche gaming market, they probably aren't going to see phenomenal success, but I think there would be a massive hole in the market if they were to change too much.

Even in a year that included The Last of Us and GTA V, most of my favorite releases of 2013 ended up being on Nintendo systems. It would have been a fairly dismal gaming year for me without Super Mario 3D World, Lego City Undercover, The Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD, New Super Luigi U, and Pikmin 3 (plus the absurd flood of excellent 3DS games, most especially A Link Between Worlds).

I was skeptical of the new gamepad before I ever picked one up, but I can't imagine the Wii U without it now. Having constant access to maps and items in Wind Waker HD is great, and being able to press a single button and instantly be playing Zelda on the pad is a godsend whenever my wife wants to take over the living room TV.

It would be nice to see the Wii U selling better, but I can't really say that I'm surprised it isn't. Ah well... I'll almost certainly pick up a PS4 and an XBOX One at some point down the road, once some decent games start coming out for those systems, but for now I'm content to just wait and watch while enjoying my Wii U

I'd hate to see what people would have said on the internet in July '87 when the NES was STILL doing shitty. Christmas '88 was when the NES took over youth culture -- over 3 years after its release.

I'm curious which three absolutely must have games were on the PS4 that convinced you to pay $400?

Franchises that emerged on the PS3 that I look forward to playing on the PS4.  Currently there aren't any on the Wii U that do it for me.  The PS3 demonstrated to me that both first and third party developers are willing to make new, fresh IPs for their console, and nintendo failed to do that for me with the wii, and they failed to do it in the year they had to convince me to buy a Wii U.  Keep in mind that the PS4 has been out for like 2 months now.  The Wii U has been out over a year, and completely, and utterly failed to convince me to even consider buying one.

In other words, the PS4 didn't have to convince me.  I had a PS3 and was very happy with it, and therefore I was pre-convinced on the PS4.  I also had a Wii, and am still bitter at how few games came out for it that I cared about.  So, therefore, nintendo had to convince me.  They failed.

Nintendo WiiU is by far the best console. I use the gamepad (no tv) for 90% of my gaming. The problem is the horrible name, media bias, and lack of games like Metroid, etc.

The company needs to stop alienating the market... and the developers.

I think the WiiU will start to dominate sales by late 2014 with the game lineup and inevitable price drop that will follow.

Nintendo must be have done something right. 100 million Wii consoles sold  vs 83 million Xbox 360 and 80 million PS3.

I haven't really warmed up to the Wii U yet, but I have played my DS/3DS games more than any of my NES/SNES/N64 recently.  The better games for Nintendo systems have come out on the handhelds. If you are a console snob then you have missed quite a few amazing games.

Wii U is a cracking console and I play it regularly. I say that the gamers nowadays have no idea what playing a game is meant to be like, are they meant to be a medium to increase the size of your ePenis, get angry and rage over the internet or are you meant to have genuine fun whilst playing a game? I have stayed with Nintendo because they stick to their roots and continue to develop and publish games that are 100% fun and they are not afraid to push the limits of gaming and innovate.

people need to realise they are missing out on some incredibly good games and fork out.

I bought a Wii U shortly after launch I will not buy a ps4 or xbox one. I prefer just playing the first party titles anyway and don't get too excited about call of duty 17 or gta 26 I could care less. I like being able to let my kids play it and not have the games be that hard.

There's a handheld attachment for the SNES and Gamecube and it would certainly boost Wii U sales as well.
This would be amazing.  You'd have to sacrifice the 3D, of course, but that would be a small price to pay for being able to play 3DS games on a TV and the Wii U Gamepad.
