"Huh... I don't like it as much as I once did..." That icky feeling of revisiting a favorite and seeing it doesn't quite hold up

Ever have one of these moments?

Particularly for a game almost everyone raves about?

You never enjoy it, but it happens from time to time. You eagerly fire up an old favorite, that you haven't played in years, and for whatever reason(s), it just doesn't click with you today as it did however long ago.

Six years ago, in 2006, I finally played a game I had been curious about for 12 years since 1994 when I first saw the game's preview in EGM. THE FIREMEN for SNES. I loved it in '06, and found it to be unique and brilliant. I, pardon the pun, fired it up yesterday and for some reason it just didn't resonate with me. I found it tedious and a bit boring to be honest. It wasn't as hot (again, pardon the pun) as I remembered it being. I'll have to replay this game again at some point to make sure it wasn't just an "off gaming day" so to speak. Everyone who has played it LOVES The Firemen, but I wonder if it isn't the kind of game that makes a great first impression, but lacks the lasting power and is more of a "1-hit wonder" (i.e. playing it once is enough)

Would love to hear from others now in regards to this topic's question. How about you... what's your game and story?

I haven't had this happen with a video game anytime recently but it happens when I revisit old bands or albums I used to listen to way back from time to time.

Super Pacman arcade. I use to love that game and spent all of my money at the certain arcades that has it.

I went years without it and wishing some system would port it. I forgot where I played it last but when I did I didnt take much joy out of it.

God, PS1 skating games are the worst to revisit post EA's SKATE on the new gen consoles. I played the shit out of all of them back in the day, like Thrasher Skate and Deystroy and obviously THPS, and nowadays, they're virtually unplayable. 8 hours in one night with a friend when THPS first came out, and that was on the demo alone!

As mentioned above, the old THPS games don't hold water as they used to. Another for me was Driver 2, played the shit out of it when I was young. Recently rebought it, it played for a day and haven't touched it since.

This happened to me when I bought Secret of Mana on Virtual Console. I was so into it as a teenager and totally geeked when Nintendo put it up on VC, but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I haven't bothered looking for a cart since.

I never had that happen actually. Games I loved 20 years ago I still love today. That list has gradually grown but I still love NES, SNES and N64 games as much as I like some newer titles

On a more serious note, I've played EarthBound today for so long, I feel all tense and mentally worn out.
Then you called your mother and felt better?

Same here.  Everything I loved as a kid I still do, and many have been added to the 'love it' list since I started collecting.  There's still plenty of room on the list if I find more, too.

I have alot of these.
Twilight Princess I bought a Wii for but I think it's garbage today
Banjo Kazooie (mentioned it in another thread just a little bit ago)
Phantom Hourglass
Pokemon Ruby Versions (I love all the other versions though)
Super Mario Sunshine (loved it as a kid but can't stand it now)
Mario Kart 64
Sonic Adventure (this one has aged the worst of any game I've ever played)
Zelda Spirit Tracks
Zelda Minish Cap

For some reason I really loved Bayou Billy as a kid. So about 6 years ago when I wanted to start collecting all of my favorite games again, that was one of the first few games I bought. Such a HUGE let down, I don't understand why I had such fond memories of it.

I used to play 007 and Alien 3 alot on the sega genesis. Both games don't do much for me anymore, same deal with Jurassic Park on the genesis. The magic is just gone.

I remember having so much fun playing Raiders of the Lost Ark on Atari 2600 when I was a kid. I recently played that game and it was horrible.

I have not encountered this yet but I didn't play a huge variety of games when I was younger maybe 10 SNES and 8 N64 games. But I still love them. Tony Hawk games on the N64 are still awesome!

I'm with cremorecs. I haven't had it happen with a game, but it has happened with several bands. I always hated Linkin Park's new stuff, but when I revisited Hybrid Theory and Meteora last year, I was like, "This is crap..."

The opposite happens to me. I play a game that I remember hating, and think "Hey, this isn't half bad. What a timeless classic for the ages."
