Rambo is done.

According to my math, this completion both puts me over 800 points for the second straight year and breaks the single-year licensed points record I set last year.
You're also in the neighborhood of beating Bea's record for games cleared on a system in a year.  Might already have passed her.

I must confess I don't do a great job of keeping tabs on the SNES threads. What is the record for completions there? And I suppose her tally is a bit higher if you add her SNES and NES completions together for any given year, since she's been in active in both threads in the same year before. I'm not sure I'm even half the gamer she is.

Looks like I have already passed her SNES mark for 2017. But I guess she also beat 12 NES games that year, so maybe I should shoot for 222 just to pass her total number of games. Has anyone else on the forum ever beaten more games than that across all platforms in one year?

I have those numbers elsewhere, but no, no one has been close to that on here or on Sega-16.

Totally agree about Silver Surfer. Gets blown way out of proportion. It's not even hard for a shmup on the NES.

Beat Orb 3D last night, proof attached.

Was like trying to stab myself in the dead center of my eyeball with a golf pencil for three hours. Tedious, to say the least.

I like Orb 3D. There were a few very inventive levels in there.

I definitely enjoyed some of the unique aspects of it. I wouldn't have stuck with it if it were completely awful. But those last few levels are...shew.

Took care of Circus Caper:

Tried to play it on original hardware but it crashed shortly before the final boss (at the timed event with the kangaroo), so I just did it on an emulator instead.

It's a nice-looking game with some interesting ideas and atmosphere, so it's a shame that it botched its own design so completely.

Now that I actually have a copy of it, I think I might try beating Air Fortress. It seems to be quite a long game. So, it may take a while before I get anywhere in it. But I'll still give it my all.

Also, Captain Skyhawk is great.

That's one of those NES games that I can't believe anyone bothered to bring over from Japan. Out of all the good games that were available, that's what we get? Ghost Lion is another one that comes to mind.

Kung Fu Heroes is another one. It's so Asian and quirky that it feels like a Famicom exclusive. The game is pretty fun though, albeit hard as hell near the end.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Dragonstrike. Since I've never played it before (though I once watched TMR play it for a few minutes) I'm playing on Easy. I'll go back and redo the game on higher difficulties eventually but for now, will Easy be enough? It only changes the health level AFAIK, and doesn't affect the game's ending (correct me if I'm wrong on that).

BTW I've seldom had a game be more exactly like what I expected it to be. It could have been really fun if they'd just tweaked a couple design parameters, but...

If what you said is true, then it's fine.

I started Metal Max. As expected of a 1991 Famicom game, it feels very polished. Not too different from Metal Saga, which came out 15 years later. Although it doesn't seem to be as open as that game (so far). Still, I'm having fun and this appears to be yet another good rpg that we missed out on.

Killer track:

Never participated in one of these, how / where can I reserve a game to beat? I'm not sure what's left and I don't wanna start a game someone else is already started.

Page 1 says which games has been beaten and which that has not. There's no official reservation of games, but if you announce in the thread you're playing a game people tend to respect it.. although no guarantee. Some people don't read everything in the thread, or are of a compeditive mindset, etc. Last year I played through Adventure Island only to to see someone beat it 30 minutes before I proudly was going to announce it.

That kinda stunk about Adventure Island, but you still got the joy of beating and playing it

Appreciate the info as well. I’d like to announce I’ll be playing Ring King on original NES.

It was my second (excite bike was first) game after SMB that I played on the system.
Is that it though? If so I’ll post when completed!

Barbie is done. For a game that's so short and not super hard, I'm still not surprised it lasted into the final 200 games. Pretty mediocre.

Does this make me the Hi-Tech champ?

AD&D: Dragonstrike is done:

Beaten on Easy with, naturally, the Bronze dragon.

This could have been such a fun game if they'd changed a few things about it. As it stands, it's far too tedious and obnoxious for its own good.

I beat Metal Max last night. It's a turn-based rpg that stands out quite a bit compared to all the other Dragon Quest clones, both because of its setting (post-apocalyptic) and its gameplay (switching between walking on foot and riding tanks). You find various tanks throughout the game for your three characters, and you spend money to upgrade them with better parts, weapons, etc. The best way of making money is optional bounties, which is a very modern feeling mechanic for an NES game, way before FF12's hunts or stuff like that. The majority of time is spent exploring ruined buildings and factories, and every enemy is mechanical in some way, even the plants and animals. You'll certainly feel like you're in a broken-down world. The soundtrack can be catchy, although not on the DQ/FF/Mother level.

Negatives: The balance of the game is poor - I feel like I either crushed the enemies or had no chance. I also felt like it was a little too easy to just use the rental tanks rather than upgrade the ones you own. There isn't much of a story, as you're basically just moving to the next town/area without an overall goal until you get to the end and suddenly there's plot. The menus were frustrating and slow to use, and it was never simple to do anything.

Overall, I enjoyed it more than Sweet Home which I beat last year. Although, if you've played Metal Saga on the PS2 like I have, I don't think you need to play this because little had changed from the first game to that one.
