Not sure how I missed this. Grantland is one of my favorite sites.

I know nothing about baseball cards...but that was VERY INTERESTING!

Man, this card isn't messing around growth wise. I pulled out this old 2 sided poster of valuable baseball cards I got as a kid from 1991:

Here's the front and back for the full lineup:

50-100 units is the optimal number of product for the highest holy grail prices. Any less than this and it becomes too rare for its own good. When there are too few of an item the units get locked up into collections and never trade hands. It is the trading of hands each time for a higher and higher price that creates the high value.
So looking at the expensive NES items, if there were more of them they would be selling for more?  Gold NWC (~13?), CIB SE (~20?), sealed SE (~3?) are all way under that 50-100 units.  They also don't trade hands often but when they do its a big jump.  Maybe the grails won't get to insane levels like other hobbies because they are too rare.

8Bit-Xmas...

If you looking for this in respect to baseball cards then the outlook is not good. There have been some fan based released baseball cards that were obviously released in low numbers. Most baseball collectors don't consider them releases or valuable.

That's it. Very interesting story.

If you found that doc interesting, you should read this book.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/006...

The writer, O'Keefe, was interviewed in that doc. His book goes much more indepth about the history of the card in general, but especially that particular card (the famous Gretzky copy).

Man, that $42,093 price was a STEAL back in '97.

Got any of these for sale? Sell them to me. I also buy other NES Publisher inserts, and even GB/GBC, and SNES inserts too.

PSA 1 sells for $400k, does that mean Pauls SMB VGA 10 will be $400k in 60 years?

The card auctioned by The School Sisters of Notre Dame nuns in 2010 was previously unknown as the collector who bequeathed it had owned it since 1936. That being said, who's to say how many more could be discovered in the future? Certainly not many, but after the Black Swamp Find, it's exciting to think that it is possible.

$2.1M still makes it the third highest sale.
