yeah that's what I understood it to be as well.

Yep just checked my master list and the white box version is the -1 code.

Uh... we're talking about boxes.  Don't start intermingeling label variants, etc... otherwise I have 8 different on this one.

You can save us a heck of a lot of time if you just let the world see your list (Of course, that will take all the fun out of this)

One day. One day.

At this point though I'm wondering if a grand and an NDA would work

Back onto the matter at hand, I might have to add those Impossible Missions if they're all NTSC.

I have a Goal! box variant with a promo offer on the front, and also the text on the spines is flipped so it conforms to rest of the NES library. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

There are still sooooo many not listed yet.  Here is a pic of some of mine.  Here's the one Jonas referred to.  Here's the one Krunch referred to.  And two bonus ones that haven't been mentioned.  T V and TV on WLorDraw, the corrected TV is the -1 box.  Lot's of VGA sealed copies of the original, thankfully I have them both sealed although only one is VGA'd.  Red and White 4-player logo version NPA Football.  Who can name more?

Oh boy. If you're going to include spine differences with and without warnings, you are on a slippery slope that just leads to hangtabs, SOQs, codes, and Rev-A's, oh my!

I throw some in the mix that is a bit more noticable.

Ninja Gaiden II: box top text- facing front and facing back (completely flipped)
Bart vs the Space Mutants: "Matt Groening" above and below Lisa on the back of the box

This list will become maddening

The Black King of Kings is the original. It has an NES on the back and has a lower part number than the tan box.

Also Rad Racer has a back that has different screenshots.

ah yes NG2.    The same (well similar) is true of the Black Bass.    One flap with the title one without.

WTB Cdn sealed black boxes, sealed Cdn first party titles.    I.e. the "mattel" Cdn boxes with both french and english.   Mainly black boxes, zelda, link, and tyson, but let me know what you have.    I am interested in anything I don't already have!

This is a great start for a possible sticky thread maybe?
I mean, all these variants (major and minor) should be enlisted on the database IMHO.

Given what Braveheart is saying, this list will NEVER be complete. I'm beginning to suspect a patter with Jaleco and Capcom though.

I think it might be useful to scale back to the original scope and just focus on getting an accurate list of the few where the art itself (not the typeset and other extraneous stuff) changed.

ie. one where the comparison is not a red apple to a green apple

but a red apple to green beans

But its your list of course Just saying that the more significant the required variation the easiest it is to manage and get it right. The little stuff we can just wait for that day 15 years from now when erik publishes his list

Good point. Maybe I'll just make it simpler. I wouldn't say it's my list anymore though. Definitely not into unlicensed.

I like the red apples, green apples, green beans analogy.

Can't maintain the list atm though. In the process of moving yet again.

Don't know if this has been brought up but GOAL! has 2 box variants. One is normal, the other has a prize that can be won on the front of the box. I can take a pic if needed of both.

edit...

Just saw Brave's post.  I found my box for .99 cents CIB in the wild.  I bought it to upgrade my other one and realized that they were both variants.

Thank you community for a great 6 years of collecting, getting to know some of you, and learning more about retro collecting.  NES will always be the heart of my video gaming and I wish you all the best in the future.

Suppose there are 5 variants in average per game, that gives us a total of 5*768 = 3840 boxes. The database already have some of these so... I don't see this as an impossible mission to complete in 1-2 years with everybody's help. But maybe I'm just to positive on the matter

^It can probably be done if it's just boxes. I would suspect the real challenge of Braveheart making his list is that his also trying to figure out what cart/manual variants went with what boxes. That requires a larger amount of searching than just gathering pictures of boxes with different things printed on them.

Updated. Added a "verified" or not indicator. This tells us if it's been verified that I have the proper variant to the original listed.

Since Tecmo Bowl is included, you could also include Tecmo NBA Basketball. One has a white backing behind the official NBA product logo, the other a transparent backing.

There's also Racket Attack, one with "1 or 2 players" image, and one without.
