So I got a folder from LJN recently that had advertisements from a trade show back in 1988.  I was curious when I saw this game I had never heard of before.  I did some research and the only thing I could find about it was a discussion of it in this thread back from 2007.

http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/...

It appears this is the same packet he was talking about.  I scanned some of the advertisements and will be uploading them for your viewing pleasure.  If anyone has any info about World War III it would be very enlightening.  Also I wanted to note that the flyer for Nightmare on Elm Street has some screen shots from the alternate game that was never released where you play as freddy.  This is the first time I have seen a screenshot other than the town overview, you can actually see Freddy fighting some kids.  Anywho enjoy and if anyone has any info please speak up!

Wow, I'd love to find more info about an alternate Nightmare On Elm Street game. The overhead shot of the houses remind me a bit of the C64 game.

Thanks for sharing. I wish the poster had a screenshot, that would tell us more about the game.

I'm speculating that the game might have been too complex for the NES, and was perhaps scrapped before coding ever got off the ground.

I'm betting Nintendo said they would not license a game which put you in command of nuking cities and shit.  And Nightmare was probably vetoed because it put you in control of a serial killer.  No matter how awesome it would've been, Nintendo just didn't allow some shit to happen.

"It's always amazing to me how some of the most worthless games from a gaming perspective tend to fetch outrageous amounts of money. But then again, it could be said that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I'm curious if the high bidder of the $873.04 Stadium Events (cart-only) realizes that it's nowhere nearly as rare as about 20+ games I can think of that sell for 1/10th that amount?  At any rate, I wanted to draw attention to this trend: if people say it's rare, it must be true, and therefore it must be had at any price."

A child-murdering serial killer, at that.

Looks like it could've been StarTropics or Zelda II - esque judging by those screenshots.

A strategy WW3 game? interesting.
I'm surprised they didn't release the Elm St game given the popularity of Friday the 13th.
Do the Elm St screenshots imply the existance of a proto?

I have read about people looking into ROM's of NES games and finding alternate title screens and unused graffix what are the chances of this being the case with Nightmare On Elm st maybe hidden in the ROM someone could unleash Freddy to go on a murdering spree.

Yea I know that overhead town view existed, I was more pertaining to the other two screen shots that actually show Freddy in a side scrolling fashion. I have never seen those screenshots on any other poster or advertisement.

Damn, that would have been rad to play as Freddy. I love the game as it is now but it pisses me off that this game never made it or a port of the C64 game which I never got a chance to play.

having played the C64 version the game is not the same as from those screenshots. I think they were going with similar concepts, but the overhead town shot is very different... as for a physical prototype... who knows, but with those screenshots i'm sure something was(is?) out there at one time.
