Zelda Phantom Hourglass is UNPLAYABLE on the new 2DS Puzzle where you must close and reopen (3)DS to solve it is no longer possible

You know how Nintendo has that new 2DS as a sturdier one piece non-3D (and thus more affordable) alternative to the 3DS? Sounds like a pretty okay "entry level" option for the 3DS right?

There's just one (at least one) problem with one blue chip DS game in particular...Zelda Phantom Hourglass. In that game there is a part in the game where you must close the DS and then reopen it to solve a puzzle (and yes it's mandatory to advance the main story/quest). And I have no doubt there must be other DS games (there were what, over 1500 or so?) that use that technique too for a part of the game.

But now with the 2DS not being able to open and close...that is no longer possible and thus making at least one game (and a MAJOR blue chip one at that) unplayable.

Oops.

You can click the now handy sleep button to replicate what happens when the 3DS is closed, thus solving the quest.

Whew, that was a close one on Nintendo's part eh? I thought for sure they had goofed and really made an embarrassing blunder with that one. It was bad enough when they themselves just had to mention "younger gamers" when they explained who the 2DS was marketed towards...like we need any more reinforcements of that Nintendo stereotype.

As much as I think Nintendo went downhill with their home consoles, and don't really care about handhelds much, I don't think they'd miss something as important as that, or a built in mic, ya know?

Why would you need to close the console? That doesn't make sense.

When you get to that puzzle in Phantom Hourglass it makes perfect sense (and it's very clever I might add) when you see it in action.

The best way to play any of the DS Zeldas is with the unit closed and powered off anyway. They're repetitive and a chore more than fun, my least favorite games in the franchise.

Who would think that revisiting the same temple 12 times is a good idea?! Yeah, I love to replay the same dungeon over and over!

lol jone... I tried these games for like 5 minutes... I couldn't stand that you gotta walk/run touching the screen instead of the d-pad, argh!!

I couldn't really get into Spirit Tracks... hated having to use the stylus for so many things that should have been mapped to the d-pad / buttons.

I love Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Different approach that worked for me. Maybe Link would have been pissed too at the overabundance of returning back and forth, but you know he memorized those rooms he went to before to make the task less tedious. Who said going on an adventure has to be at a new place every time? Some people dont mind repetition, others do. Now Skyward Sword...dont get me started on how much I hate that.

On a more serious note, I've played EarthBound today for so long, I feel all tense and mentally worn out.

Don't think Nintendo really thought about it, but the sleep button should solve this. Or easier fix, don't play it on the 2DS?

Uh...more so than you need to stop worrying about stereotypes, Nintendo needs parents to buy their children Nintendo hardware and software, perpetuating the cycle of generations playing Nintendo games.

You want one that legitimately could be a problem if I remember it right? Trace Memory for the DS that Nintendo published. One of the puzzles if I remember right is like the zelda one with open and close, but another you need to pivot the DS into a more closed position to use the reflection of one screen onto the other to create the answer to a puzzle required in the game. Pretty sure sleep buttons won't help that one out. It's a minor title though but still, it was published by them.

Yep, they are very careful with stuff like that, unlike say, Activision who were probably totally red because of the DSi ditching the cart slot(and ending the Guitar Hero DS series.)

Guitar Hero has been discontinued for a few years now...

I wasn't so sure about the whole stylus only control either...but I loved both games and I think that whole business of drawing/making notes/crossing stuff off your maps and drawing your bommerang paths and so on is pretty handy!
