Castlevania.  A classic.  Of all the games to not own....  I'll see if I can snag a copy later on this week, but since this one is popular it's not easy to find in my local retro store.

Playing through the Zelda games:

Complete: The Legend of Zelda (8/1/13); Zelda II (1/6/14); Zelda LTTP (5/18/14); Link's Awakening (4/8/15); Ocarina of Time (2/7/16)

keep the holy water to help stun him. same goes for Death. Its a pain but if you can time it just right, its not too bad.

The Grim Reaper is about as far as I get in the game before I finally give up. It isn't so much the battle against him that is tough, it's getting to him that is a pain. That last hallway is one of the worst parts in the game.

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

That hallway is a real pain. If anyone hasn't seen the AVGN Castlevania video, he flips out about that exact spot at the 5:38 mark: http://cinemassacre.com/2009/10/0...

nice job! Death always gives me problems since his pattern is so random. Dusted off the game and played alittle. man, soo rusty. I died at Frankenstein.

Also, there's a few spots you can damage boost to avoid. Second scene after the door in level one over the brick wall (wait for the second bat) to avoid the fish people. And, the Medusa heads on level 2 (up the stairs the second time, wait til the second or 3rd head to appear).

Complete Game, 90,060

Was able to beat the first two stages without killing anything besides bosses.  After that, I had to start making sacrifices.

I'm sure that the score can be pushed a bit lower, but I give up.  I had too many runs end while getting chased down by hunchbacks in Stage 4.  I'm convinced that there's a way to run all the way through that level without killing any of them, but I've never been lucky enough.

Another nasty spot for scoring where you wish you didn't have to was the Grim Reaper floor on Stage 5.  I swear that every time I would throw holy water at an axe knight, a medusa head would land right on the explosion and I'd pick up a 1,000-point bonus that I didn't want!

For those still playing, I recommend bringing something else to do while waiting for the timer to run out after each boss fight. I opened up a good book.

Haha! I hear you, I had my guitar just beside me and I had the time to play whole song while waiting for the clock to ran out. That clock is going down really slowly, and that boss tune is stressing me a bit so I muted the TV sound as well.

Not much I'd say. You can easily tell by yourself, just look up a castlevania NTSC play video on youtube and you'll notice that the music on the rom you played is slower (as the gameplay).

Never knew that that was a difference between pal and ntsc. Anyways, it appears that the rom I used IS in fact PAL, and not valid for the contest. (It turns out that it's a Portuguese ROM. Strange.) Anyways, I'll track down an ntsc ROM and see if I can get another score in before the end of the week. Thanks (kinda) for letting me know Guillavoie.

I goofed in saying Italian cause it was clearly more spanish/portuguese languages. The 'ponto' for point is a portuguese giveaway.

Don't you own a NES by any chance? Playing with real hardware is much better than on emulation, for controller response in particular.

I do own an NES clone, but only have a little bit of money as of now. My plan was to try to get the upcoming games before they showed up... but that didn't work out. So now, I'm kind of using the competition as a way to "test drive" each game out as we play. I actually got Palamedes as soon as we started playing, but didn't get it 'til it was over that week (and yeah, the play control is better on hardware.).

So, my plan is now to get the games I like this year, before we play them next year.

This is a PAL version and not valid for the contests as the rules in the first post state.  This score will not count.

The list of games for next year won't be released until closer to the start date of the 2014 contests.  The majority of the games we played this year (and maybe even all of them) will not be played next year, so expect to see a completely different lineup of games for 2014.  And don't be surprised if I place stricter rules on emulator use so I'm recommending that everyone should start getting used to playing on consoles.
