Oh dear, Gradius is one of the three shooters I've ever owned (the others being Parodius 2 and Talespin) and the only one I haven't beaten. I've been avoiding it for far too long now, so I guess this is it.
The blizzard outside agrees.

I completed 3 loops, and had my first death on loop 4 level 6.  I had something like 20 extra lives at that point, but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't finish off that level.  A few times I managed to get back to laser and that helped grab a few more points.

One time I actually got laser and a shield back, and made it to the boss.  I had no options, so I just had to hope my shield held up.  My shield finally dropped, but then the boss died!........  but one of his final projectiles took me out, as he sat there with parts of his body already dissolved.

i see you blasted a few more space objects than me, i have to put a few more hours in this week and see if i can do better, this was never one of my better games

Is the virtual console version of this game on 3DS allowed? I find the circle pad to be divine when playing Gradius/Life Force.

Make sure that you have missiles and options equipped, then stay in the upper left corner of the screen so that the missiles drop onto the volcano below you.

It's also good to have the shield by that point, because from time to time a projectile will defy the odds and make it to your ship anyway.
