Here's hoping this we'll get to see more high end N64 prototypes surfacing to the public in the near future.

I hope you didn't buy this from a assemblergames seller ?
There are a lot of fake n64 prototypes floating around on the web/ebay these days.
I have been offered some fakes in the past.
I know some seller names but i won't tell them here

People think that a big n64 cart means prototype BUT these carts can be flashed over and over.
There are a lot of NU flash gang writers out there. And it is not rocket science.

I am not saying you have a fake prototype or that your selling a copy
BUT

^^^^^^

This is cause for concern.

In combination with my other comment you see why.
AGAIN this could be a real copy !! I'm only warning people that these can be faked easy.
Because a lot of n64 prototype collectors where scammed in the past thinking that these big carts are always the real deal.
PMme for more information on the names steven.

I am curious of the story of how this item was obtained. Looks cool as hell if it is legit.

I'm not a hater but a helper.

Google n64 gang writer for a big scare.

Having a Big n64 cart doesn't mean shit. You can flash these and put whatever you want on it.
Fakes have been sold in the past.
And why would nintendo put this on n64 cart in 2003 ? The gamecube was already 2 years out ?!
This rom is floating around on the net. Not a good sign.
Not saying it is a fake but it is weird.

This is what olivieryuyu said about the ''zelda prototype'' on assemblergames.
Olivieryuyu (team carrot ) is 1 of the biggest n64 prototype dumpers/hunters on the net.

comments made by olivieryuyu 0n assembler :

I don't think the owner of the cart realize he is may be at the end of chain of a scam. Some people use gangwriter with beta/unreleased game rom that can be found on the web and resells "outstanding" protos.

I heard many bad stories about them and I am afraid it won't be the first or the last one.

Yeah it would be possible to transfer the MQ rom to a cart like this with the right equipment, but I'm 99,99% sure this is legit.

I know almost nothing about N64 protos. What things are you looking at to reach your conclusion? I would like to know what to look for if I ever get into N64 protos. Is it possible to distiguish, from photos,  between a random dev cart flashed with a valueable rom and one that was actualy used in devlopment?

They have N64 dumpers, somewhere, out there. That's your best chance, not pulling roms off the board, which would also make it worthless.

The only test i can think of is dumping the ''prototype'' and compairing it with the dumped rom on the net.
And I'm 99,99% sure it is the same.

Take a look at this video.
Some guy plays the dumped Zelda gamecube rom on his n64 with a n64 everdrive.

I don't agree with everything he said btw.

The "only" way to flash a rom to an official Nintendo flash cart is by using a Gang Writer, and with that either by copying a "master cartridge" or by sending a rom from a PC (with the correct official software, good luck finding that)
http://www.nesworld.com/n64-gangwriter.php
How do I reach my conclusion? well official 512mbit flash carts are insanely rare, how do I know? I've been collecting N64 protos for years and have NEVER come across a 512M cart myself (currently own roughly some 60 N64 protos).
If this was just a flash of the already released rom, not only would you need to have a Gang Writer, know how to operate it, but also have access to a 512M cart. That combination is very unlikely

One odd thing though is why it's on a 512M cart, afaik OoT is only 256M.

As for the youtube guy comparing the proto to the released game, he abviously has no clue about N64 protos ($50 and you have one of these flash carts..... gimme 4 of those please!)

A piece of hardware needs software, who gives a hell if it's official? Worse comes to worse, I'm sure you could make your own if you probe masrshallh enough times for how the N64 works. Still, there are dumpers, why not find one of those people? It's just an N64 cart with additional hidden functionality, any N64 dumper can do that.

I give up.... you're out of reach :-)

Not only will you have to know the internals of the Gang Writer but you also need to code a piece of software that interacts through a SCSI interface. I'm sure there are loads of people out there with that task on their mind, Gang Writers are all over the place too...

And you lost me at "Still, there are dumpers, why not find one of those people? It's just an N64 cart with additional hidden functionality, any N64 dumper can do that."

I guess I'm out of reach, being one of the more technically inclined. I don't exactly know how an N64's protocol works, but I have a good idea.

SCSI? Gang Write? Why the hell are we talking about technology we will never use for this crap. Here is my point, you don't need either of those. If this cart is worth dumping, there will be a cheap N64 cart dumper made. That cart is dumpable, because it is NO different from an N64 cart, when the programming modes and such are NOT active. Slip it into an N64, it will just work. Slip it into a generic cart dumper used to dump all other 250 N64 Games, and it will probably dump perfectly.

Most n64 prototypes are indeed 256M or 128.
The software for the gang writer is on the net. Just check assembler you will find it.
There where warnings on assembler for fake n64 prototypes long ago.

I'm scully from the x-files skeptical . You are fox mulder (i want to believe). (joke

you're talking about dumping the rom, I'm talking about how the rom got on to the cart in the first place... and for that you need a gang writer
