Hello Everyone, as the title suggest I am attempting to put together a list of what the requirements to "beat" all the NES games are, but I need your help! I have had the idea for some time that I would like to complete as many NES games as possible, but certain titles got me thinking, this is where you come in.

 Obviously many games are straightforward in what it takes to finish it, you just complete all the levels. Then there are games like Jeopardy! for example. Do you think winning on any difficulty setting is "winning" or only on the hardest setting (3) ? What about sports games? What do you think it takes to "complete" Tecmo Bowl? Of course there are also games like Duck Hunt which seem to loop forever and have multiple game modes. What about Tetris? or Dr. Mario? There are many titles that can be debated!

I have split the table in two sections "Completion Condition" and "Supreme Mastery". If a game has only one condition for completion like Adventure Isand for example, then its "Completion Condition" would just be a "Normal Completion". For games with multiple game modes (easy , normal, hard) I would say that a game has to be finished on "Normal" at least to be considered complete, whereas finishing it on "Hard" would be grounds for "Supreme Mastery"

I would like you to contribute your thoughts on what it takes to "complete" any game, or what is required for "Supreme Mastery" as I have called it. Obviously you could say, for example, "you must beat Contra wthout dying for Supreme Mastery", but I feel the goals dont have to be so esoteric, however attainable that goal may be. Instead I would opt that a maxed out score is much more impressive then a no-death run in this case. For games like Kid Icarus and Metroid that have multiple endings beating it with any ending would be a "Normal Completion", but only the Best Ending would be conditions of "Supreme Mastery" in my mind. Again, this is all open for debate.

There are many "Normal Completion" games I have not added because I have not checked them for multiple game modes and such. Please contribute your thoughts and help this list grow!

Cool idea. I was just thinking about this the other day.

A couple of contributions:

"supreme mastery" on the Star Tropics games might involve beating them with the minimum in hearts/equipment.

I <3 this thread, Herbalist! I've got some stuff to take care of tonight, but I'll throw down a few things I've always thought.

Games like Donkey Kong, DK Jr., etc... I consider those beaten when you get to by the first wrap around. They don't do much else but speed things up, really. Not sure about mastery, though.

King's Quest V doesn't have anything besides a normal completion, does it? It's been a long time (I've only been through it once).

Star Wars has a normal completion, I don't remember there being bigger levels of difficulty. Mastery would probably be 100% at the end of the game, though.

Mastery for CV1 and 2 could be getting through the second quests maybe?

One that really boggles me though, is Rescue: The Embassy Mission. I'll have to check the manual and see if it has anything about what each level is considered, since they name them all funkily.

Just some ideas thar fer ya!

G.I. Joe has a second and third quest... sort of at least, you only get two Joes for the second run through and just one for the last. That could be supreme mastery.

tecom super bowl: normal compleation would be playing an entire season and winning the superbowl and for supreme mastery maby play an entire season with no losses or only giving up a certain # of points and winning the super bowl??

EDIT: for tecmo supreme mastery you cant change any of the opponents plays or players either.

mike tysons punch out: supreme mastery im thinking beating the every opponent without being knocked down at all.

I don't know what the minimum hearts are on StarTropics, unfortunately. I'll play through it, sometime in the next week or two and see.

I would also suggest that "mastery" of the Legend of Zelda either include reaching Gannon without the sword (a challenge), beating the game with only 3 hearts (a harder challenge), or reaching Gannon with the true minimum equipment (VERY hard to do)

Mastery of Zelda 2 would probably be beating the game without any extras (heart cases OR magic bottles), or beating the game below some specified experience level.

Similar thoughts for the Dragon Warrior games. It will take some thought to see what is even possible, but beating the game below a specified experience level would be the only way to ramp those games up, since most aren't beatable if you lack the best equipment.

8 Eyes has a second and third quest after you complete the game. It's basically hard, then harder, then hardest.

Dr. Mario has different endings for clearing virus level 20 on Low, Med and Hi speed settings. I can't remember if you're allowed to start on level 20 to get them.

Pin Bot gives you ending credits for getting more than 10 million points, I believe.

^^ Yeah, 8 Eyes should be "Normal Completion", then "All modes beaten"

Arkista's Ring should be "Noraml Completion", then "All quests beaten" (I think it's 4 times through)

"mastery" of any Mega Man game should be a "no death" run on the hardest setting available.

"mastery" of Astyanax would be a "no death" run, as well.

I don't know how you make Air Fortress harder. Maybe beating it is finishing the first quest, and mastery is beating the second quest (brutal).

I like this idea! What do you guys think for Bubble Bobble? I would suggest beating it with one continue would be Supreme Mastery but what about normal completion? For Rainbow Islands I would suggest normal completion, then for `mastery` - collecting all 7 big diamonds and getting to the 8th secret bubble bobble world and finishing that.

I think you'd have to beat all bosses with the blaster only as well. 

Without lots of energy tanks, I don't know that all bosses in all mega man games can be beaten blaster only...

I guess, if it's doable, beating ALL bosses with blaster only would be a better benchmark than a no death run.

For Tecmo Super Bowl- Supreme Mastery might be going undefeated and winning the Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts? Just a suggestion. Great idea! I can't wait to see the finished product.

Well, working from the top down...

QUESTION: What does it take to "complete" 10-Yard fight, or to "master" it? Thoughts?

ANSWER:

*Thoughts* - Beating the median "pro team" = normal, beating the superbowl team = mastery?
Or would you say to "complete" it normal would just be to beat all them teams? After beating pro it goes to playoff, im assuming beating that goes to super bowl, and not sure after that because I havent the patience to play another game of this awful game lol

I consider that I beat the game Tiger-Heli when the game started over again.

I played through this last night. There are the three ranks, lieutenant, captain, commander, which basically translates to easy, normal, hard. I would consider finishing all 5 levels on captain as "completing" the game. To master it, I would say beat all missions on commander status, possibly even with 100% of agents alive, and 100% hostages alive.

^^^ The latter certainly sounds like mastery of game, and as close to perfect as you could get.

Also, mastery of Arkista's Ring would be beating the game 4 times through to reach the final ending.

I think supreme mastery of Final Fantasy should be to win with 4 white wizards. Didn't NP run a list of names for anyone who could do this in the high score section?

Sounds like a great challenge. If I ever feel the need to play this game, I might dare to go this route.
