What the frack even is this game?

How are you liking the game so far?

I don't even know what to do, this game makes no sense, swinging your sword does nothing, and birds

To get your participation points, you have to get the giant egg that is on a platform on the far right. You have to drop down to it from above. And then go to the far left and keep climbing up platforms until you reach the bird who flies you to the cloud area. Then pause during the death animation when you lose your last life and take a picture.

You can also use the Familiar spell and it will grab the egg and return it to you.

I don't get that spell as it gives the eagles more time to assault you. When you get to the cloud section, don't forget about the 1up that is near the top left of that area. The "hole in the cloud" above it is also where the windbane spell is that you will need to defeat the wind boss.

Pretty much everything important is at the top of the playfield in the cloud area. The far left cloud hole is where the windbane spell is,the middle two holes lead to the same area that has a chest with a helmet in it and there is food there too. The far right hole is where the boss is.

It's late Monday afternoon and two people have posted scores.

This game is making me wonder if I've sorely underrated NES Ghosts n Goblins. It doesn't seem so bad anymore.

I was too "busy" (EVO 2016!!!) yesterday to give this game a try.
I am not even sure I actually have it in cart form. I should because Fabio *swoon* cover, but still, it has been a while since I last did inventory on my games.

I will check it tonight, but I will probably not post an score till Wednesday. I have to get Paperboy 2 out of the way first.

... This is so, so wrong.
I don't have a copy of Wizards & Warriors II with the Fabio cover! D:

Time to start hunting for a CIB copy!

Just took this game down! I didn't go all out point shaving as I wanted the diamond sword and have extra money just in case I needed a key or something else useful so this score is definitely beatable.

Honestly I thought this game would get a better reception than it has. I figured I wouldn't be the only one who likes this game. I played this a ton back in the day and it still has one of the coolest final boss battles!

I got to admit I'm in the same boat as you guts, have always loved this game since childhood, and still play it almost every year and still love it just as much. I get that the controls are a bit strange at first and that you expect a knight to be more handy with his sword, but once you get the hang out of it the feeling of the gameplay is great. I also agree about the final battle, very cool, and quite challenging too, especially the first few times you get there. I bet anybody that reach the end for the first time will get their ass whooped by those elements heads, lol.

Sorry, guys. This is unplayable. I can beat Battletoads, but I can't beat the first level in Ironsword.

Haha, that's not unplayable, I beat that game when I was not even 10 years old, IIRC (I might not remember correctly though). Also, it took you weeks to beat Battletoads, and I'm pretty sure that if you spend equal amount of time on W&W2 you would beat it as well, probably quicker than Battletoads.

Well, you two aren't alone in liking this. Youtuber Austin whose opinion I respect has it among his top 10 favorite NES games.

He streamed some gameplay.

Yeah, but Battletoads is fun, haha. I still play it almost every day because it's so much fun.

Playing Ironsword is like getting root canal work done.

Very interesting, I might check that out.

It is really strange to me cause I always loved W&W 1-2 since childhood (a little later W&W 3 as well) and always thought that they were generally appreciated games. I found out it wasn't the case when I joined this site and realized that the games weren't mentioned much and more often than not it was an ignored trilogy, which is kind of odd when you have 2 sequels on the same console.

No joking, I'm sure that if you give in enough efforts to get ahold of the game you will love it at some point. The music will help in the process as well.

I played this quite a bit as a kid as well, beat it even...after continuing several times I believe, but playing it now just makes me want to not play it anymore. I didn't get much play on the 3rd, but did play the gameboy game quite a bit too. I think I just don't have the patience anymore.

This may have overtaken Baseball as least popular contest game.

I'll try to submit a participation pic today at least. I think it's safe to say Guts has this one in the bag, unless someone else is hiding out and waiting til the last minute.

Just like Bert I have played this lots growing up and even beat it as a kid, but now I have really no idea how to effectively play Ironsword.

I'm going to guess I'll make it to Level 2 this week.

Well you never know, there are a lot of great players who compete. I've always loved the Wizards & Warriors games.

As far as this game, you have to play it a little different. My advice is to play it pacifist and semi-speed run style. Just avoid everything you can,get what you need and go. The level layouts are not super difficult, but can be tough to traverse at first.

I could probably write a guide for this pretty quick.

I've beaten it a few times as a kid, and just playing the first level I could sort of feel a lot of it coming back to me. That said, even when I did beat it, I died a buttload of times. So, just good enough to complete the game, but not enough to really compete.
