Hey everyone!  Sorry for the late post tonight.  This week's game is going to be Gyruss.  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Game Over
  • Looping of the game is not allowed.  If you beat the game, pause at the first stage and take your picture there
  • Highest score wins

The contest ends Sunday, 3/18/12 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name must be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Good luck everyone and have fun!

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Beware the Bimmy Marsh!

577900 make that 810900 , still not enough to place I'm sure..  I'm expecting 1.2mil++ from a couple of people

got past the mercury brain and to the sun levels.. those fireballs home in a bit and they got me since I'm getting used to the 10 degree dodge.

I need to take a pic with a 2-3 second exposure that would be pretty trippy.

does anyone actually play this with control A?  it's really easy to stop moving at the 90 degree marks and get killed.

If you have any GBA signage or kiosk I would be interested. Please send me a PM because I'm only here about once a month now but I'm still VERY interested in large system signage or small playable kiosks related to the GBA.

Wow, 500k is a great score, for participation. You sure you don't want to keep playing?

Played around with this game last night and discovered a bonus I didn't know about before: Avoid using your super shots. If you max out your supply of these and collect another one, you'll get 3,000 points. Getting this bonus on every level adds up! The only boss I use those shots on is that one with the swinging tentacles. That thing always kills me otherwise!

Oh yeah, in case you didn't know, try to get the special bonus during the Chance Stages. Whatever the stage number is, shoot that many enemies and you'll get 30,000 points instead of the usual 20,000 for a perfect. (ex: On Stage 4, shoot 4 enemies)

Oh man, I remember this game from the Konami arcade classics compilation on the GBA. It was a pretty hard game, and I'm sure the NES version would be just about the same. However, I don't own this game, so I'll have to skip, and lose my chance to earn 1 point.

I actually like using Control A.  Hitting those compass points precisely can be useful.  It just takes some getting used to. I'm probably in the minority on this, however.

I tried Control B after playing with A for a while and I got killed rather quickly.  I think it's best to just pick a style and stick with it.

Spent a few more hours tonight and came up with this.  Got every special bonus and hit a large number of enemy chains.  It's no 1.2 million, but I'll take it.

Not a bad run man

I, too, prefer the A control. I have not played the harder levels yet, but so far, I like to use the compass points to perform my movements.

I'll try a point racking run next. If I can stay focused stage 23 can yield millions. I'll keep this score a secret just in case point racking isn't dissallowed. (It really should not be allowed)

Yeah, point racking is a problem on this game, especially when we only get one loop. There's no timer to kill you if you stay on the same stage for too long. You can stay on the same stage forever and certain enemies will keep respawning.

I dunno if we need a rule against point racking or not. It's tricky because there's a fine line between staying on the same screen for too long and "being careful". Where do you draw the line?

1,000,000 points? I call cheater! haha I kid, I kid. I tried this game the other day, and while fun, it's definitely challenging (maybe because I was using an emulator and I hate using them). I'll have to find some other means to play the game before Sunday, though I doubt I'll find a copy.

Well, I meant to say this since the beginning of the contest, sorry for being late:

Let's refrain from racking points at the end of stages. Let's focus on milking bonus points throughout the run. Alright?

The line will be, as long as you're playing honestly and try to make your way through, it's okay. It's not perfect, but this will be enough.

I was feeling confident in my score, seeing as I've never played this game before this week. Then I looked at some of the other submissions, and wow, I don't stand a chance.

Not as great as Tom, but I'm still happy to break the million mark. I missed only one special bonus ( Got 31 at stage 32), and I've been a little bit flaky with the killing streak bonus by the last levels cause I was nervous.

I loved this game when i was young, and it's great to get back to it and play it seriously. A nice, quite simple, shooter.

Nice runs, guys! Kudos for the complete games (especially guillavoie for the million!).

I really like this game. The whole circular motion thing isn't used often. Off-hand, I can only think one other game that uses it (Tempest). Are there any others?
