The NES MAX sucks, right?

After all the years, I still can't really figure this controller out.  I know it's not just me as I have heard scores of people complain about the MAX since it was new.  So what's the deal?  That Cycloid control pad is not really good for anything as far as I can tell.  Maybe Gyruss, but I truthfuly haven't ever tried that.   But still, one game?  Ever tried playing Mario Bros with this thing?  Instant death.
The grips are nice and turbo fire is always welcome, but that control pad.  Oh that control pad. Am I (and many others) just doing something wrong, or does the MAX truly suck?

I have to agree that it's pretty much worthless, IMO. I forced myself to play it for about a week, and finally had to put it down.

It's not THAT bad...

My friend WALKED ALL OVER ME 21-0 a couple nights at Super Tecmo Bowl using the Max controller, and no one has ever goose-egged me at that game. Did I just admit that... Now it's his favorite controller of course.

With the cycloid control you have to move that thing around precisely and then press down, so its twice the work for the sloth-like gamers like me.

I think the Max was very innovative for what it was trying ot do. I think if there were more NES games that requird Street Fighter II style moves it would have bene more useful.

Nintendo was trying to create an analog feel for a digital controller, imo.

Personally, I beat countless games with the thing, and it was my first rapid-fire controller for any system. I thought it was great back in the day. I had absolutely no issues with it.

I guess people either love it or hate it, but the majority seem to hate it. It gave me many personal victories, so I really can't complain a single bit about it.

The nes advantage blows that crap out of the water although I think the max came out before the advantage. I remember adds for it in the old nintendo fun club magazine.

I don't mind the Max, although the standard pad will always be my personal favorite.

"It's always amazing to me how some of the most worthless games from a gaming perspective tend to fetch outrageous amounts of money. But then again, it could be said that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I'm curious if the high bidder of the $873.04 Stadium Events (cart-only) realizes that it's nowhere nearly as rare as about 20+ games I can think of that sell for 1/10th that amount?  At any rate, I wanted to draw attention to this trend: if people say it's rare, it must be true, and therefore it must be had at any price."

I hate the dogbone as much as I do the Max. The standard one is my favorite (I have a set of Power Grips on it though) followed by the Advantage as a close 2nd.

I second the power grips on a standard pad. I actually bought my Power Grips from toys-r-us in the 90's and promptly stopped using my Advantage, which was my fav up to that point. I also have the cool day-glo buttons from Doc's Fix-a-pad (also a Toys-R-Us special) and my original controller's still my fav. Although for convenience lately I've been using the Messiah wireless since I have it hooked up for my NWC repro (switching channels to press player-2 start, then switching back to play is tha bomb) and am too lazy to swap it out

I guess Im on the oposite of this, I love the Max, It has the perfect feel for me.  I remember using this a lot with 1943, and Fester's Quest among other games.  But then again, I've always held a special place in my heart for odd ball controllers.  I guess that's why I own the Steel Battalion controller and the FPS Controller on Xbox.

I used to be so tied to the Advantage, to the point that I couldn't play worth a damn on anything else. After years of not playing, I find that I like the original controller better now.

I always used to use the advantage on Final Fantasy... not so much to play the game with, but when I needed to stock up on cure potions, I would set it to turbo and put the leg of a chair on the button while I went to the bathroom or got something to eat.

I love the Max. It's all I ever used for the little bit of NES gaming I did. It was great for the special moves in Kickmaster.

Gimme the dog bone.  If the D-pad was actually a D-pad on the Max, then it'd be a decent controller.

There was a point where I would play with nothing but the Max. Recently, though, I've had an issue with it, feels way too small or something.

I always have a problem with controllers being too small. This PS1 controller used to be my favorite video game controller ever. I remember playing "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" with it and couldnt get enough. Unfortunately the controller and game were both my friends and who knows where they are now. I just read that the PS3 was going to copy the design of this controller too (I dont know much about PS3 though, maybe they already have??). That would be a smart move, these things are comfortable as hell for someone with big hands.

Got my Power Grips today. I havent tried them out yet, but I slipped them on the controller and its 100 times better already. My hands are still a little big for them but its a definate improvement. I have a feeling i'll like these a lot.
