Game #3:
Tennis
Description:
This is one of my favorite black box games. A lot of people write it off as being not too many steps above Pong, but this has the added features of being able to lob shots and time your swing to aim the ball. Plus, I think it looks nice. Needless to say I'll be trying to put up a good score here.
Rules:
- You must play on a real NES
- You may submit multiple scores during the week, but only the best one counts
- You may not use any Game Genie codes
- You do not need to beat the computer to earn points in the competition
- You must provide a picture of the TV with the final match score and opponent (I'll be able to verify the level by their color) on it accompanied by your NA screen name (as in the NWC challenge) to receive a score
- You must provide a picture of the TV with a perfect match score of 6-0, 6-0 to earn the bonus
This is another game where it's difficult to capture the final match score, since you can't pause it on that screen. If you miss it, remember your match score and at least get a picture of what opponent you played.
Scoring:
Points are awarded for your best effort during the week.
There are two main components to your score: Base Pts (BP) and Victory Bonus (VB).
Base Pts
- Level 5: % Games Won (%GW) * 15
- Level 4: %GW * 10
- Level 3: %GW * 6
- Level 2: %GW * 4
- Level 1: %GW * 2
Victory Bonus
- Add (1..5) pts to your score, depending on the level of play, if you win the match
2 Pt Bonus
- +2 Pts for winning a match without losing a single point
All scores will be rounded to the nearest whole number.
The max score you can earn at each level is as follows:
Level 5: 20
Level 4: 14
Level 3: 9
Level 2: 6
Level 1: 3
For the tennis challenged, here's some terminology that you might need to make sense of the rules:
Point - a sequence of volleys started with a serve; scoring goes 15, 30, 40
Game - first player to 4 points (winning by 2) wins a game
Set - first player to 6 games (winning by 2) wins a set
Match - first player to 2 sets wins the match
Examples:
6-2, 6-1 win vs Level 3 = 8 Pts ((12/15*6)+3)
6-4, 6-4 win vs Level 4 = 10 Pts ((12/20*10)+4)
6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win vs Level 5 = 13 Pts ((16/30*15)+5)
2-6, 2-6 loss vs Level 1 = 1 Pt (4/16*2)
4-6, 6-4, 4-6 loss vs Level 5 = 7 Pts (14/30*15)
Don't forget, you can still submit scores for Baseball and Donkey Kong Jr. Math this week.
I apologize in advance if that was completely confusing. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of it.
