Ok, so this may be a stupid question, but how do we prove the time of the DKJr. Math?

You don't have to prove it, check Rule #5. We're all honest folk here.

Only three hours to go for full credit!

Here is my last minute entry.  Rule 5 will have to apply here.  Hard to get a photo of the 5th apple, you can see the win though.  As for time, I was right around 1:45, give or take a second or 2, didn't get to see it exactly, so whatever you give me will do.

I had never really played this, might be fun against someone else, I kind of liked it to tell you the truth.

And this is what it's all about, folks... experiencing things for the first time. I'm glad you enjoyed it somewhat. This is a pretty good score. I think it would take some lucky target numbers/number placement to grind out a quicker time.

Remember, you still have two weeks to try to improve this if you want, as 80-90% of a Calculate B score is worth more than what you got here.

Better brush up on your Tennis skills for this week, everyone. Rules and scoring to come this afternoon.

-Brian

P.S. How's the Baseball coming, Dain? Only one week left.

Game #3: Tennis

Description:
This is one of my favorite black box games. A lot of people write it off as being not too many steps above Pong, but this has the added features of being able to lob shots and time your swing to aim the ball. Plus, I think it looks nice. Needless to say I'll be trying to put up a good score here.

Rules:

  1. You must play on a real NES
  2. You may submit multiple scores during the week, but only the best one counts
  3. You may not use any Game Genie codes
  4. You do not need to beat the computer to earn points in the competition
  5. You must provide a picture of the TV with the final match score and opponent (I'll be able to verify the level by their color) on it accompanied by your NA screen name (as in the NWC challenge) to receive a score
  6. You must provide a picture of the TV with a perfect match score of 6-0, 6-0 to earn the bonus

This is another game where it's difficult to capture the final match score, since you can't pause it on that screen. If you miss it, remember your match score and at least get a picture of what opponent you played.

Scoring:

Points are awarded for your best effort during the week.
There are two main components to your score: Base Pts (BP) and Victory Bonus (VB).

    Base Pts
  • Level 5: % Games Won (%GW) * 15
  • Level 4: %GW * 10
  • Level 3: %GW * 6
  • Level 2: %GW * 4
  • Level 1: %GW * 2

    Victory Bonus
  • Add (1..5) pts to your score, depending on the level of play, if you win the match

    2 Pt Bonus
  • +2 Pts for winning a match without losing a single point

All scores will be rounded to the nearest whole number.

The max score you can earn at each level is as follows:
Level 5: 20
Level 4: 14
Level 3: 9
Level 2: 6
Level 1: 3

For the tennis challenged, here's some terminology that you might need to make sense of the rules:
Point - a sequence of volleys started with a serve; scoring goes 15, 30, 40
Game - first player to 4 points (winning by 2) wins a game
Set - first player to 6 games (winning by 2) wins a set
Match - first player to 2 sets wins the match

Examples:
6-2, 6-1 win vs Level 3 = 8 Pts ((12/15*6)+3)
6-4, 6-4 win vs Level 4 = 10 Pts ((12/20*10)+4)
6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win vs Level 5 = 13 Pts ((16/30*15)+5)
2-6, 2-6 loss vs Level 1 = 1 Pt (4/16*2)
4-6, 6-4, 4-6 loss vs Level 5 = 7 Pts (14/30*15)

Don't forget, you can still submit scores for Baseball and Donkey Kong Jr. Math this week.

I apologize in advance if that was completely confusing. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of it.

Triple post, I guess. The Arena has been ominously silent this week.

Anyway, I'm starting out with a 6-2, 6-1 win over level 3 to try to get my skill back up.

I followed that up with a woeful 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win (oy, the score was flashing when I took the picture) over level 4 for a whopping one point more. I'll need to improve that later this weekend, and maybe take a crack at level 5.

Anyone else?

As they say, better late than never... Here are my entries.

DK Math:

Got a time of 2:36 on Calculate A. To be honest this game didn't do to much for me so I think I will leave it at that.

Tennis:

6-0, 6-2 win over a level 2 opponent. I was 6-0, 5-0 at one stage and could almost taste the 2 point bonus for winning the match without a losing a single point, the computer thought otherwise about that though. I might see if I can improve against a tougher opponent if I get the time. This game is actually heaps of fun and I really enjoyed it.

You just made my day. Thanks for the entry.

That'll bump you up into 2nd place (2 pts for DKJr Math, 5 pts for Tennis). I'm glad you liked Tennis. It really is a fun and challenging little game. More people should try it out. <hint hint>

I think in the name of encouraging participation, I'm going to continue to leave all of the games open. I'll just continue to dock 10% for every week that goes by. so we're currently at:

Baseball - 70% (still looking for a score here, Dain )
DKJr Math - 80%
Tennis - 90%

Game #4 will be Pinball, just as soon as I figure out what I want to do for it. I have good ideas for most of the games I'm going to do, but this game has always just left me a little flat so I'm struggling a bit.

I hope to have rules up sometime tonight. If you have any ideas on what to do for challenges in it, feel free to PM me.

I'll put up a tennis score at some point.  The computer was whipping me on every level.  It is hard to play at 1 or 2 because it is soooo sssllloowww. ...; Level 5 is fun, but he beats me every game.  Once I figure him out I will post.

Yeah, sorry. I should have posted my intentions earlier. Once it slipped too far, I decided to just skip the week instead of get out of sync.

Pinball's coming tonight.

Thanks for the patience, everyone. Of course as soon as I said it was coming, my system spazzed out for the night. Ugh. Anyway, without further ado...

Game #4: Pinball

Description:
This is a very basic pinball game, and coming from someone who grew up on David's Midnight Magic for the Apple II that's saying something. Developed by the people who would become HAL Labs, it shares some elements with Kirby's Pinball Land for the GameBoy. You'll have only 5 minutes to rack up as many points as you can in Game A and Game B (the ball is faster). Save Pauline more than once on the same ball to earn a bonus.

Rules:

  1. You must play on a real NES
  2. You may submit multiple scores during the week, but only the best one counts
  3. You may not use any Game Genie codes
  4. You must provide a picture of the TV with your score on it accompanied by your NA screen name (as in the NWC challenge) to receive a score
  5. You may time yourself. We're on the honor system here. Time starts when you press Start (yes, I realize there's a pointless 5 second delay... it counts).
  6. You may use multiple balls to achieve your score, but time is obviously wasted when you have to start a new ball.

Pause the game when your time is up to take a picture of your score.

Scoring:

Points are awarded for your best effort during the week.
Score as much as you can in 5:00 (or until your game ends, whichever comes first) in Game A or Game B.

    Game A
  • > 75,000 = 10 Pts
  • > 60,000 = 5 Pts
  • > 45,000 = 4 Pts
  • > 30,000 = 3 Pts
  • > 20,000 = 2 Pts
  • > 10,000 = 1 Pt

    Game B
  • > 150,000 = 20 Pts
  • > 120,000 = 10 Pts
  • > 100,000 = 8 Pts
  • > 80,000 = 6 Pts
  • > 60,000 = 4 Pts
  • > 30,000 = 2 Pts
  • > 15,000 = 1 Pt

    2 Pt Bonus
  • +2 Pts for saving Pauline twice with the same ball

Don't forget, you can still submit scores for all of the previous games. It's never too late to get in the competition. I know I'll be trying to improve my Tennis result this week.

Tennis - 80%
DKJr Math - 70%
Baseball - 60%

So can you submit a score for both game A and game B on pinball and get points for both?

You can submit scores for both, but only the best one counts. It's a pick your poison kind of system. The Game B targets are arguably harder which is why they are worth more points.

I have no idea how easy some of these point targets are to achieve as I am pretty terrible at this game, so it's possible that my scale is way off. That's part of why it took so long to come up with this. It'll hopefully prove to be somewhat balanced.

Here's me slaughtering the level 4 opponent in Tennis, 6-3 6-1. Unfortunately, it doesn't upgrade my score at all since it's two weeks late.

I followed that up with a 6-4 4-6 4-6 loss to level 5. I had it at 4-4 in the 2nd and 3rd sets, but fell apart down the stretch in both to give the match away. I don't think I've ever done that well against him before without using an emulator and save states.

I don't have a Pinball score yet... I'm horrible at it. I'll see if I can put something good together in the next couple of hours.

Dust off your Zappers, Game #5 is Wild Gunman. Scoring posted tomorrow.

Game #5: Wild Gunman

Description:
It's time to break out some totally awesome Nintendo accessories! This week we're taking our Zapper to the Wild West and testing our gunslinging skills. Draw against just one outlaw or take on two at a time for more points. Earn a bonus by singlehandedly bringing down an entire gang with your 15(?) shooter.

Rules:

  1. You must play on a real NES
  2. You may submit multiple scores during the week, but only the best one counts
  3. You may not use any Game Genie codes
  4. You must provide a picture of the TV with your score on it accompanied by your NA screen name (as in the NWC challenge) to receive a score. This can be the high score screen on the main menu.
  5. Straight from the instruction manual:
    Quickly draw your gun and shoot the gunman. *It is against the rules for a player to draw his gun before the gunman does.
    Obviously, I can't enforce this, but it does make the game far more fun and challenging if you do this. If you don't have a holster just hold the gun at your side until your opponent says "Fire".

Scoring:

Points are awarded for your best effort during the week.

    1 Outlaw
  • > 420,000 = 10 Pts
  • > 260,000 = 5 Pts
  • > 210,000 = 4 Pts
  • > 160,000 = 3 Pts
  • > 110,000 = 2 Pts
  • > 60,000 = 1 Pt

    2 Outlaws
  • > 1,000,000 = 20 Pts (roll the score)
  • > 730,000 = 10 Pts
  • > 550,000 = 8 Pts
  • > 460,000 = 6 Pts
  • > 280,000 = 4 Pts
  • > 140,000 = 2 Pts
  • > 80,000 = 1 Pt

    2 Pt Bonus
  • +2 Pts for beating Wave 7 in Gang mode

Don't forget, you can still submit scores for all of the previous games. It's never too late to get in the competition.

Pinball - 90%?
Tennis - 70%
DKJr Math - 60%
Baseball - 50%

My pinball score (game A). I kept getting high 60,000 and low 70,000 scores when the time ran out until I broke through the 75,000 mark! It's one of those games where you either do really well one turn and really poorly on the next.

Wild Gunman score to come soon!

Ugh. I was out of town for the last 11 days and unexpectedly without internet (who would have thought the in laws wouldn't have it?), so rules for the next game (Duck Hunt) as soon as I get settled back in. It's our first bonafide classic of the competition, so I want to see some participation.

I have a lot of playing to do to try to catch up.

All right, we're back on track here with game #6. Welcome to the fold, Nistle. Feel free to submit scores for any old game you want, too. Any score is better than no score. I certainly have a lot of catching up to do myself.

Game #6: Duck Hunt

Description:
No description necessary here. Shoot ducks for points... yadda yadda yadda.

Rules:

  5. Please don't hold your zapper right up against the screen. I find that a distance of 6 feet or so, depending on the size of your TV makes for a good challenge. Again, we're on the honor system here.

Scoring:

Points are awarded for your best effort during the week.

    1 Duck
  • > 1,000,000 = 10 Pts (roll the score)
  • > 705,000 = 5 Pts
  • > 450,000 = 4 Pts
  • > 280,000 = 3 Pts
  • > 155,000 = 2 Pts
  • > 65,000 = 1 Pt

    2 Ducks
  • > 1,000,000 = 20 Pts (roll the score)
  • > 705,000 = 10 Pts
  • > 450,000 = 8 Pts
  • > 280,000 = 6 Pts
  • > 155,000 = 4 Pts
  • > 65,000 = 2 Pts
  • > 37,000 = 1 Pt

    2 Pt Bonus
  • +2 Pts for beating Round 20 in Clay Shooting mode

Don't forget, you can still submit scores for all of the previous games. It's never too late to get in the competition.

Wild Gunman - 70%
Pinball - 60%
Tennis - 40%
DKJr Math - 30%
Baseball - 20%

Nice work, nismo. You're way better at 2 Duck mode than I am. I have a lot of trouble dealing with the more random duck movement it has.

I have a lot of work to do, if I'm going to catch you. I'm in dire need of more free time.

Rules for Golf coming in moments.

Game #7: Golf

Description:
Golf with an overweight Mario! Master both the front and back 9 holes to maximize your points. Neither half is more difficult so they will share the same scoring.

Rules:

  1. You must play on a real NES
  2. You may submit multiple scores during the week, but only the best one counts
  3. You may not use any Game Genie codes
  4. You must provide a picture of the TV with your score on it accompanied by your NA screen name (as in the NWC challenge) to receive a score. Take a picture after 9 holes, and another after 18.
  5. You can use scores from different rounds. If you post a 38-34 one round and a 34-38 the next, that would be good for 8 points.

Scoring:

Points are awarded for your best effort during the week.

    Front 9 (Holes 1-9)
  • <= 31 (-5) = 10 Pts
  • <= 33 (-3) = 5 Pts
  • <= 35 (-1) = 4 Pts
  • <= 36 (E) = 3 Pts
  • <= 38 (+2) = 2 Pts
  • <= 40 (+4) = 1 Pt

    Back 9 (Holes 10-18)
  • <= 31 (-5) = 10 Pts
  • <= 33 (-3) = 5 Pts
  • <= 35 (-1) = 4 Pts
  • <= 36 (E) = 3 Pts
  • <= 38 (+2) = 2 Pts
  • <= 40 (+4) = 1 Pt

    2 Pt Bonus
  • +2 Pts for getting a hole in 1 on any hole. 3, 9, 11, & 14 are your best bet.

Don't forget, you can still submit scores for all of the previous games. It's never too late to get in the competition.

Duck Hunt - 90%
Wild Gunman - 60%
Pinball - 50%
