Going forward the competition will have two games running at a time.  They are separate leaderboards, with their own points awarded.  You can compete in one or the other, or both.

This appears to trip people up so I'm posting it again:  If you post an updated score please re-use your original post, or create a new one and remove your old score.  That will make my life easier sorting things out.

February Game #1: Gradius III

Rules
  • Goal -> High Score
  • Bonus Point -> Per each loop of the game completed, up to a maximum of three loops
  • Play on the default difficulty
  • Start a new 1-player game with the setup of your choice
  • You are allowed 2 lives
  • Any indefinite point pressing, if possible, is prohibited
  • Please take a picture of the beginning of each new loop in addition to the pic of your final score
February Game #2: Bust-A-Move
Rules

  • Goal -> High Score Progress
  • Tiebreaker -> High score
  • Bonus Point -> Complete the game
  • Start a 1P Play game on the default settings
  • Play until you lose once.  Choose "No" on the continue screen and it will show you your score.  It scrolls so you must be ready to get your pic.
  • If you complete the game you can get a pic of your score at the end of the credits if you are quick.  You may want some earlier pics as insurance
  • Any indefinite point pressing, if possible, is prohibited

Gradius 3 - 41,500

Bust-a-Move - 1,788,430

Getting some early scores in.  First time giving Bust-a-Move a serious try and it's a pretty fun game.  It can get to be a pain really quick if the game doesn't give you the colors you need to clear a board.  However, if you get the right colors early on, you can rack up some decent bonus points as long as your aim is good.  I can't stand the third set of stages that have the bubble background.  Messes with my eyes when they start moving.  I'm not that good at Gradius 3 and need a lot of work on that one.

Go for it, but it won't count if you submit a picture    Maybe you should play Mario 3 instead

Saving a post. I've never played Bust-a-move so that should be interesting. Gradius III, on normal difficulty, as long as I don't die stupidly on the speed stage, I should have a chance at a loop.

That's harder correct?  I felt like 2 lives on normal will be more than enough for the average competitor

Plus the whole "unlock by rapid firing 16 times in a second" is not something I wanted to try and work around, if I understood that correctly

Yeah unlocking arcade mode basically requires a turbo controller. Definitely much harder than the default mode.

The up directional button has worn out on my two year old Logitech gamepad. Time to get a new one for the contests... again. At least they're cheap. I'll try to take better care of it.

I didn't take pegboys comment as unlocking arcade mode so much as actually playing the arcade version of the game which is quite a bit different and dastardly difficult. Makes the snes version look like a chump.

Ah, yes. The actual arcade machine is incredibly difficult by comparison for sure!

Correct.  The first 3 levels (maybe just the first 2 even) of the arcade game are harder than the entire SNES game.  For people that have never tried it you will be in for a rude awakening after playing the much more accessible SNES version.

Man I agree. They're great games, but Gradius is pretty intimating. I also can't remember the last time I played a bust a move clone.

Each loop of the game, as in it will start over on a harder difficulty when you kill the final boss
