I asked another gamer community about Squashed for the NES; the concensus seems to be that my cartridge is authentic.

Does anyone have any information about this prototype I recently acquired?

Yes, it is an original. There are at least 5 or 6 of them out there.

Interesting, seems to be the NES sequel (or prequel) of the Maru's Mission game on Gameboy.

There's a whole bunch of them floating around, I have one as well. Fun little game, but it is just a blatant rip-off of several other franchises. Like, not a clone, just straight up steals things from other games.

I love how TheRedEye mentions that it tries to pass itself off as a veggie game in the English version but in the Japanese the characters are meant to be something else entirely. That amuses me.

This game is pretty cool and relatively hard IIRC. I have the Famicom original and the funniest part about it is that you have to HOLD the start button to pause the game. Gotta keep a wrench nearby the next time I try to beat it!
