I've been reading all sorts of contradictory information about the Super FX chip lately.  Two separate wikipedia articles contradict themselves, for example.  Now I'm just trying to get something definitive.

Specifically, what are the real differences between the Mario chip, the GSU-1, and the GSU-2?  Also, what revisions of Starfox were there?  Did they all use the Mario chip or did later versions use the GSU-1?

Thank you for your time.  I'm just trying to get this figured out.

My star fox uses the mario ship, and it's the redesign of the cart if that helps

You might get a little more help over at NESDev.com.

It doesn't look like that site provides much information outside the original NES. Thank you for the link though, it might prove interesting when I'm looking for more technical information on that system.

There's an SNES section with all the SNES guys out there on it, so it's the best place you have anywhere.

The SNES section has some stuff about cartridge building, but otherwise just links to outside sites. I must confess the early 90's layout left me lost and confused as to how to navigate. Could someone provide a link to the Super FX info?

The Mario Chip could only run at 10.5mhz

Now both the Super FX 1 & 2 chip are really the same chip except the FX 2 chip offered more SRAM.

Here are the Specifications, (chip with board)

Super FX Chip (16-bit)
Clock Rate: 21MHz (w/ divider 10.5MHz)
Number of contacts on board: 100 pin
Rom: 1MB
SRAM: 32 KB

Super FX Chip 2 (16-bit)
Clock Rate: 21 MHz
Number of contacts on board: 112 pins
SRAM: 64KB to 128 KB

HERE are links to learn more about the chip, an interview with one of the men who worked on the chip and a commerical.

If you ask on there you would have been provided the info already. I'll edit this in an hour with all that you'll need, but you'll need to be more proactive next time, where the people who know stuff on getting people who know other stuff know the stuff you want to know about.

To this day I have no idea what the word "proactive" actually means. (Who exactly is "antiactive"?) I rankle at it's use, in the same way as I do when someone says "think outside the box" or "let's table this for now".  My apologies, I didn't even notice there was a place to ask questions on that site until this last check.  It really is a terrible layout.

Thanks for your help Thunderblaze, that clarifies a lot of things. Would you know if there was any version of the original Starfox that used a GSU chip instead of the Mario chip?

Nope, all copies of starfox used the mario chip sadly. Its possible to remove the maskrom of starfox and switch it with one that has the gsu 1 or 2 chip though.
