I was doing some research and found this table (made by ALbailey and quoted by guillavoie in this thread)

Can this be considered the most updated list?  If not, I can edit this one if any new ones have been found since and we can consider it the "definitive" list.  The list I got from the aforementioned thread has a lot of other crazy stuff in it, and is rather old.

The Odd/variants thread located here has mentions and a lot of pics but its pretty convoluted and I was hoping  for a nice clean list for our refrence and google searches.

Im not as concrened with the rarity numbers as they can be hard to prove and are subjective (might even remove them) but the "which is rarer" column is the perfect thing.

If you have any info to add please do so, but lets keep the discussion to NES 3-screw/ 5 screw variants.

Is the 3 screw Golf really the rarer of the 2? I have run into like 10 of them in the wild and all have been 3 screw. Never seem to find a 5 screw.

Oh man, I hope you're ready. If we are going to update this thing, we need to talk about this scale. What does each number represent? Or more importantly, is a scale of 1-10 needed?

What I mean is this, when we are discussing rarity on this chart what we are really talking about is the chance you will find a five screw version over three screw or vice versa. If you start at fifty/fifty chance, meaning it really doesn't matter, how many steps above that are there really? I started talking about this in a thread I made a couple years ago. Link here.

Ultimately, you'll see that I come to a conclusion that I just didn't realize at the time.

Really though, I'm kinda surprised no one ever caught this. Try finding a 5 screw Goonies 2 on ebay. You won't. ...this thing is a lot rarer than the 2 that has been put on it. I don't know how whoever made the original 3/5 screw guide gauged the relative rareness of a game, but I'd say it should be at a 7 or 8. I think if you looked at 100 copies of the game in stores, you might find 2 that will be 5 screw variants.

Update!
...I thought a lot of the top dogs were in the wrong positions, and have adjust accordingly. Here is the post and my reasoning behind the changes, which I've highlighted... ...To be honest, I'm only concerned and changed stuff that was in the 7-10 range. And, here is why and how I did the numbering for this list.

10 – I have never seen a copy IRL,
9 – I have seen 1 or 3 copies in person,
8 – These were the harder carts to find. You rarely see these,
7 – These can be found, but it will take a little looking,
6 – You can find this semi easily, but it might be marked up a few bucks, and
5 – Middle of the road, you should be able to pick up a copy with a 50/50 chance of getting either one.

So I've highlighted the part about 1 in 100, because that would be a scale for us to measure off of. Or one in a million. Or one in a thousand. And then after that, I go off about changes and I create the five to ten scale. But really, what's the point of anything below that when that's the bottom? Hence my suggestion to chang the scale, or create a greater difference in rarity.

But, if you increase that range to ten, what's the point really going to be in between some of the numbers? Will you really be able to tell the difference when finding a R2/10 5Screw Top Gun vs a R3/10 5Screw Top Gun. I mean, we're aren't grading these things, we're just trying to say that some are more rare than others. Now, what's that scale?

Also, here was the table I had done with the changes highlighted:

Title 5 Screw 3 Screw Relative Rarity Which is Rarer

Oh, my WTB thread is very popular. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, Richard craniums - they all adore it. They think it's a righteous thread.
I'd also like to add that I've got my father's gun and a *scorching* price guide for aftermarket Nintendo games.
Between Dragon Warriors and nothing... I'll take Dragon Warriors - for any of my FT/FS/FO items.

I appreciate your input but I didn't really want a rarity scale involved.  More looking for a clear updated list, that is easy to find for people searching google or this site.

I feel like the "7" comes off as more rare than it really is....

Example: 3 screw lose runner. 5 screw alpha mission.

3 screw Stinger I would say is a factory mismatch, or that 'fixed' cart thing. Same with 5 screw Donkey Kong Jr Math. They exist but werent released. I got the date codes for a 3 screw DKJR math and it was dated in 86.

I wouldn't include those. Same with 5 screw RC Pro Am

Also none of the non-backlabel Konami 5 screws should be listed (Contra, Super C, Bayou Billy, Silent Service, etc) because none of them are offical, there should be another section that lists the ones printed verses the ones that are special.

3 Known copies to exist so far too, one loose, on with manual, and just recently a CIB copy. Unfortunately no hangtab box

Definitely need to see a couple more to solidify its place as a legitimate variant. I personally accepted it 100% when the second copy surfaced here in New Jersey with manual

Got any of these for sale? Sell them to me. I also buy other NES Publisher inserts, and even GB/GBC, and SNES inserts too.

This is incorrect. Stinger was officially released in 3 screw form. I had the box and manual for it.

I even made a thread about it:

Its been noted that these might have been some kind of 'demo' cart.  Not one of them have surfaced with a back label, so one can assume they were never made for sale.

Thats odd... Gangsa sent me pictures of the chip date codes and all the date codes for every stinger ive seen including those are the same.  One print run, 8734.   And I think only 2 3-screws surfaced?  The only thing I can think of is that the last literal handful of these games were printed like that, unless SOMEHOW they were reprinted.  But if they were they'd have a different date code.  I just found the other and the box was hangtab.

My gut still says refurb.  Altho why reprint 1 box... if a couple more surface id change my tune.  But after all these years and 1 box and only 2 carts.  Hmmm

Just noticed that pricecharting lists NES Sqoon twice and distinguishes them as "Sqoon" and "Sqoon[5-screw]" with the "5-screw" entry being notably higher. I always thought that all copies of Sqoon were 5-screw.

This list confirms what I already thought. Thanks! Was kinda wondering haw a $50 game had jumped to $90 in a couple short years.

I think Price Charting just differentiates any game listed with the words “5-Screw” in the listing title. If I put “Legend of Zelda 5-Screw” and it actually was a three screw it would contribute to the 5-Screw data.

Yeah. Looks like the sellers who needlessly distinguish it average $15 more.

Donkey Kong 3 is labelled as Donkey Kong on the newer list.
