So my wife watched The Wizard (happy 30th!) with me, and she actually liked it! I've since boycotted the Academy Awards since it didn't get even one nomination

So I thought seeing as how The Wizard (1989) was celebrating its 30th anniversary this year I thought it'd be a good time have my wife watch it with me; here's a free copy on YT if any of you want to see it:

I often like to have jokingly say that I've boycotted the Academy Awards since it failed to get even one nomination (like the redneck joke about doing so because Smokey and the Bandit got snubbed Best Picture..at least it did get a nomination for Best Film Editing); hee hee  And believe it or not, she actually enjoyed it (and she's mostly a non-gamer)!  And yes I was just under 10 years old at the time and yes it made me real excited for SMB3 (though I had to wait till my 11th birthday in 1991 before I got my own copy)...which would not make the US until the following Lincoln's birthday (maybe as a hidden nod to Howard Lincoln?).  And contrary to popular belief, it is NOT "just a move length Nintendo commercial"...for the first 15 minutes not one peep is mentioned about video games believe it or not.

So what about the rest of you?  What are your memories about this game?  Of course there's no way a movie like this could work nowadays (remember the Internet was still several years away at the time), right?

I'm listening... you should spend the whole time asking him questions about his brother.

I didn't see this film until college.  It was everything I wanted it to be when I was 8.

It's pretty epic and deep for a kids movie about video games.

I went to the lets play expo for the 30th anniversary of the wizard. My favorite movie of all time and it was really amazing. I would have liked any movie about NES shit, but the cast and the writing are why I still love watching it 30 years later. The expo featured a showing of the movie and Q and A after with the writer, producer, and Luke Edwards. My brother actually asked them a question about whether there was pushback from the studio for the darker themes (autism, PTSD in a young kid, running away). Really surreal experience. And of course I had Edwards sign my power glvoe.

Wow! I just found that Luke Edwards not only plays Jimmy in this movie...but also the starring role in Little Big League as Billy Heywood as well! Yet he has no Wikipedia article; go figure

Boy Meets World autograph and photo session in Boston this weekend....I'm gonna try to be as nice as possible because Mr Feeny is there, but I pretty much intend to let him know his brother is an American treasure, where as (Ben) on the other hand makes me feel physically sick when I watch him. If I'd thought of it earlier I would have bought a T-Shirt with Fred's face on the front to wear to the event

Mr. Feeny will always really be K.I.T.T. to me. If I met the guy, I'd have to have him autograph a vintage, diecast KITT Trans-Am.
