I played on different models.
And yes pal will slow down gameplay by 20% and is more easy.

I stopped this game on Stage 1,300 (the stage number rolls over to zero at 1,000).  Took me around 12-14 hours (lost count!).  Kudos to you guys if you decided to push further, but I've had enough.

This game has the a rather creative millions system.  For the first six rollovers, miniature versions of your ship appear below your score.  They are the size of a digit of your score, so you run out of room after 6.  So when you get 7 million, all of the ships disappear and get replaced by "HERO 7".  Then the next rollover is "HERO 8" and so on.  Letters are used instead of numbers when you get to 10 million ("HERO A").  I stopped on "G" for 16 million.

On a side note, I went to 16 million to see if an old score on Twin Galaxies was real.  Someone posted 15,999,990, which seemed to indicate that the scoreboard freezes there.  By passing that score, I was able to prove that it doesn't, while also putting into question whether that score was real or not.  Quite interesting!

So does that mean you are playing on a PAL system?

Well, that's all I got for this finals. Not really what I wanted to do, but time got really tight for me in between the end of the University session along with Xmas and other unfortunate events that took the most part of my time. Anyway, it was really cool to go all the way to the finals and I want to thank everyone that participate in the tournament and in the contest for 2012.

See ya guys in 2013, I'll be there for sure

Ice Hockey - 66 (69-3)

Figured this game out just at the end.  Never played it seriously before this challenge.  I actually sold my copy of this game a few months ago because I prefer Blades of Steel.  I still feel that way.

I have never beaten this game before.  I still haven't, but only because I died intentionally on Stage 6 of the second loop to rack more points.  Tough one, but doable once you know what's going on.

Thanks everyone.

Great job to guil and dev for their great showings in this tournament. Together, we put on quite a show!

Thanks also to Bimmy for putting all of this together. Nintendoage has become a great place for fun NES contests and it all starts with him. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us in 2013!

As far as videos go, I have a couple of things in mind, if anyone's interested:

I don't have any footage from my run, but I have definitely been inspired to put together a new video on Galaga. I looked on YouTube and there's nothing out there that shows all of the craziness with the scoreboard when you reach the upper millions.

I did however record the last few rounds of Donkey Kong, so look for that as soon as the holidays allow time for me to upload it. I won't show the whole 7+ hours, but things really got interesting at the end, as I was down to my last life shortly after reaching 3 million.

Ice Hockey? Nah, that link dev provided in this thread shows almost everything there is to know. Besides, I'm SO sick of playing this game. I swear the thing cheats!

Finally, Ghosts 'n Goblins wasn't anything special, so no video needed. I just played through the whole game naturally, except I point racked a bunch of zombies on Stage 3. I died a bunch of times, so my score could probably be improved by quite a bit.
