I came across this interesting Proto/Demo the other day. I thought I'd show some pics of it to the community.

What do you guys think, anyone else come across something like this?

Demo copy next to my retail copy.

PS2 version included as well. Two for the price of one.

So as it says, this will only play on a Gamecube debug unit (NR Reader)

Luckily I happen to have one of those units. Here's the title screen:

vs. the regular retail:

Notice the "IGF" logo in the corner. This is on most of the opening screens. I believe it stands for "Independent Game Festival".  I think disc is from that event.

Retail:

I've really only spent a few minutes with this disk, so I'm not sure what differences there are, but I have noticed a few minor things so far.

Very neat, this game always looked like it would be a good time. I've never seen anything like it.

Yeah, the game is pretty funny.  Kind of a cross between Metal Slug and Castle Crashers.  In a way it feels like a precursor to Castle Crashers, similar art style, humor... that kind of thing.

This game actually sells for super cheap on either gamecube or PS2. The Gamecube one looks like it sells for a little more though.

Looks like Castle Crashers because it's the same artist(Dan Paladin). This is a super sweet proto/demo man. One of the few GC games I visit once a year.

May I ask where you came along this beautiful piece?

I'm a gameube first guy, so unless it's dirt cheap for the PS2 at a yard sale I'd really like to get it for Gamecube.

Yep, I picked it up on ebay.  It was a BIN for $40.  Talk about a steal.  I'm not sure if the auction was up for minutes or hours, but anyone who saw this and decided to pass dun messed up

Maybe because it is?

Yeah, more or less.  I know it's by the same publisher and all.  This game is more of a 2D shooter then a beat-em up.  But I think if you enjoyed Castle Crashers you'd like this.

That is awesome. It is really cool that you had a debug cube to test it out.

Thanks for sharing.

Ha, yeah I picked one up last summer... just for the hell of it.  It's nice to have a game to test it out.

Yeah, this is what they sent potential publishers back then, and I believe the media as well. You'll notice O3's logo isn't on there anywhere. I've seen a few of these around, including at Acclaim's office when I was there during the bankruptcy sale. Cool find!

I love the prototypes with cases like this. So much more fun than a blank cdr with a name scribbled with magic marker.

Not sure but I really want that, Alien Hominid was my favorite game both on Newgrounds.com and to it's completion by mr. Paladin and mr. Fulp on retail consoles.

Neat item. Does the ps2 version require a special ps2 unit, or does it work on all retail consoles?

^^^ Good question, I'm not sure. I hate to say it, but I haven't tested the PS2 version yet. I'll have to do that sometime soon.
