Use the clock in your advantage, there's some stages where you can make a lot of points, and there's a lot of loophole in stages to take advantage of.

Want to elaborate

Anywhere you can jump on a repeating series of opponents.

Think the Goomba-generator in Level 1-2...  stop short of getting the infinite 1-ups and just repeatedly point-rack.

Ok thats what i thought.

I know, but where? Or is racking even allowed?

General rule of thumb for the contests:

If it is a 1-life competition (or points don't award 1-ups) AND there is a timer that kills you, point-pressing is going to be required to win and is part of the game (figuring out the best spots and optimizing them)

Yup.  Sounds like you were on the right track.

There are TONS of spots like that in the game.

It is definitely worth breaking out the old NES Game Atlas or the Nintendo Power Strategy Guide issue and planning your attack around all of those locations in-game.  (the real trick being knowing when to quit and haul ass to the ending)

I got to world 3-3 when I died by the stupid big fish. I got about 398,000 points but I know I can do much better than that. Will post my best time later in the week. To be honest this is the first time I ever even looked at the score in Mario 3 (or any Mario game)

That stupid fish ate me too. I should've used my P-Wing on that level, but it's been so long since I've played this game, I don't remember where the dangerous areas are.

Yeah I agree I should've used the P-wing also. I got cocky though, since it's one of those games I can almost play with my eyes closed (figuratively) and killed the big fish with fireballs but jumped down into the water in hopes to nab a few coins but forgot how quickly the big stupid fish comes back and ate me instantly.

I know I've beaten SMB 3 without dying, but not playing every level. I will at least get a participation point on this one, as I tend to get bored as hell point racking after about 20 minutes, so I just give up on it.

I will finally be participating in the contest this week! I could not think of a more perfect game to begin with, either, since it's about the only one I have kept up on.

For those having trouble in the stage with the big fish, I usually play that one as Fire Mario. That way if the fish gets close to me, all I have to do is shoot it with a fireball and it is dead. However, the fish will come back after several seconds, but sometimes that time frame can help you speed through parts of that stage without the worry of being eaten.

This will do for the week. I love this game but I die with too many stupid deaths to do a legitimate point run (out of 10+ runs so far, this was the only one I got over 200K). Even if I did, I know I wouldn't get close to the scores I'm expecting to even get a top 10. Good luck to all and I hope the number of new faces showing up keeps increasing.

You aren't required to play every level in this contest if you don't want to. Obviously you will miss out on the chance to score points on that level, though.

Score (Updated x4)  1,680,670

Made it all the way to the mini-castle on World 8 and got lost in it's nasty maze. I don't think I can do much better than this.

Since we have gotten quite a few scores posted already, I will announce the prize that will be given away this week if we have at least 50 participants. If we can reach that number, one lucky winner will receive a CIB copy of dra600n's homebrew Genesis game Fix it Felix Jr.
