Hi!

I was offered the thing in the photo attachtment as a game.
Is this really a game or does it need and additional passthrough cartridge containing the game ?

Everything you need to know. It is a game and is revision 2 of the game.

According to that article. Yes. Can't speak for clone systems though. Just official NES.

Cool gonna buy it then

I knew about the deck enhancer and the silver cartridge, but never even heard about this one before.... let alone, seen one.
I thought this was like a passthrough device that needed an additional cartridge containing the game (like the deck enhancer)

Very cool. I have the plug-thru version of Micro Machines. You need to plug a standard cart into the back of the connector but it will play whatever game is on the device, not the cart.

I assume this is because they were unofficial unlicensed games and this bypasses the lockout chip?

You may well be right. I always assumed it was because they were cheaper to manufacture.

I believe it's similar to the piggyback dongle on some HES games. Uses a licensed cart's 10NES chip to convince the console's chip that it's a licensed game, but the unlicensed ROM loads instead.

Kinda like how Super Noah's Ark 3D (Super 3D Noah's Ark?) worked on SNES.

Would it work in a top loader without another game inserted? Top loader doesn't have a lockout chip.

It should. I remember an AVGN video where he played Little Red Hood (an HES game with the piggyback) in a toploader and it worked.

Of course to be funny, he stuck a Game Genie, a fami converter, and a famicom game on top of it anyway.
