I actually just beat this game for the first time a couple weeks ago, and then did it again last weekend. I used to think it was impossible, as I was also unable to do it with the Game Genie's 9 lives code. I got to Machine Gun Willy as a kid, then got gunned down mercilessly. It made me pretty sad actually, because that was one of the main reasons I bought a game genie.

So anyway, I've finally laid that demon to rest, so I think I can beat all but the highest score put up so far. I'll get something up tomorrow maybe.

Bump for a new high score. Got to Jimmy Lee again, but ran out of time fighting him. Found it effective to use the punch in certain areas to get the score that I did.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

Nice score.
And punching is the only way to go to get a high score in DD. Quite risky too...

Wow 74k is gonna be hard to top. Nice score!

And yeah, obviously punching grants the most points, but I dare you to go through the entire game punching everybody in the face. DARE YOU! hehe.

I think I know how he did it.  I'm giving it a try right now and it's a great way to earn points

i hate this game. i'm stuck playing on an emulator and the controllers i have available are just not cutting it. also i'm pretty sure the computer cheats.

so, i don't know if this is an emulator issue or not (i'm thinking not because they all behave the same way), but has anyone else discovered the really nasty scoring glitch? i'm guessing not many are aware of it because of the style of play required.

I only know of the stage 2 glitch and the Williams loop at stage 3 for point scoring.
But given that DD is bug ridden, it's not surprise to me that there is a point glitch.

Bump for new score. I've had fun playing this game all week, but I'm tired of it now. Beat it twice, though.

Secret to a high score in this game: Headbutt like crazy! You get 700 points per headbutt and it takes like 4 or 5 hits to kill an enemy. It's really risky though, as the enemies almost always hit you when you do it unless you're fast enough. Plus, you hardly get any experience points to earn new moves, so I didn't get hair pull until the end of the forest area. Makes it tough to fight Chin without hair pull.

Sorry BenG76, I overlooked it at first, but I can't give you credit for your score.  The picture was taken after a completed game and pictures should have been taken after you lost your first life.

we're clear of 9 and bimmy figured out the headbutt strategy, so i'll ask for verification now: if your points are ending with 9XX and you headbutt an enemy, do you lose points? because on the emulators i've tried, your score drops to 0XX instead of going up by 700, an effective difference of 1600 points. does this happen on real hardware?

^^yes, you do lose points in your score ends in 9XX and you headbutt an enemy. Your score when playing on the cart goes to 0XX instead of up by 700. I noticed it while I was headbutting enemies. It really screws you out of a lot of points when it happens.

Well, I stood no change this week. o_o
The headbutt thing is nice. I didn't know about it.
I still prefer punches, though. It's hard to do headbutts effectively in a sega genesis alike controller.

I was racking points with a punching technique, never thought about the headbutt thing myself.

Wow, just tried the headbutt thing, comparing it to punching and kicking. It's extremely effective... over 3 times the points! I went through the first stage only kicking, only punching, and only headbutting. The results (I didn't write down the exact numbers):
Punching Only: 13,000-ish points
Kicking Only: 9,000-ish points
Headbutt Only: 34,000-ish points!

Also, check this out:

Bug 1 would have def been banned for this contest if it had been discovered, or maybe most of you already knew and assumed it was off limits. Also, what a buggy game! Sheesh. Reminds me of that card that comes with the game, notifying the player that the score may "blink" but that it's not a glitch... haha yeah but just about everything else in the game is!

Wow!

I had this game since I'm young, I knew a couple of bug in it, but not that score glitch in stage 2. That's funny.

Bug 1 is not that troublesome. You get hit every so often, so dying is inevitable if you try to abuse it too much.
And it gets really hard to do properly once you get the 4th heart. You try to move, and you'll do the hair grab.

Yeah, this is a pretty buggy game, but it's fun as hell   I've had this game since I was a kid and it's one of my favorites.  I knew about bug 1, but knew it would be off limits since we banned the Mission 2 point glitch with the bat and the Williams loop in the blue cave.  First time I played through, I did nothing but kick.  Then, on subsequent playthroughs, did a combination of punching and kicking.  Tonight was when I tried the headbutting, but I only did it once.  At that point, I was finally starting to get tired of the game.
