Anyone has some insight has to why exactly there are 2 types of snes carts
- the old ones (the ones that look more like the sfamicom style cart)
- the new ones (the ones with a crease)

old                                                   new                                 sfamicom

also i think some games can have both style
is there a list of that somewhere ?

I often wondered this myself. I think there is nothing to it other than just the fact Nintendo changed the style.

I think it has to do with the original models locking mechanism

I kind of remember there being some issue with the older cartridges ejecting via the button and getting stuck. However I never had that problem.

That is exactly why. The original model 1 SNES had a plastic lock piece that slid into the slot on the game cartridge and held it in when the power turned on. Children were pulling on it and breaking that plastic piece so nintendo started marking shells that looked like the second one. That way the cartridge could be pulled out without breaking the plastic lock.

So is this going to be the SNES version of 3/5 screw variant? Is there a list of the carts that have both styles? What year did they make this change etc. etc.?

I always thought the redesigned look of the SNES carts looked so much cooler.

I'm not sure when they made the switch, but good luck compiling a list. It will be huge. In order for these varients to become collectible, someone will need to assemble a list, determine which ones are hard to find, and broadcast it on the forums.

The first game I got with the redesigned case was SF II Turbo. I remember a friend told me they changed it so the Game Genie couldn't hold on to the cart and wouldn't work right, so that people would stop using it. He had a Nintendo Power subscription, and I remember them trying to push Game Genie as being permanently harmful to your Nintendo.
