I found a weird gray cart for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on a local game marketplace.. Is it different because it is gray other then the standered gold. What is it? Is it a demo game? What's it worth? Should I buy it? I have attached a photo of the sellers picture he posted. Thanks.

Look at the label really closely before buying it. I might be a replacement label because I've yet to here of a gray MM aside from the NFR.

That's a pretty poor picture in terms of photo quality.

It's one of a couple things:

- Reproduction label and board was transplanted which I would say is most likely
- Something was wrong with the cartridge and someone sent it in the Nintendo and received that as a replacement (kind of like the Rage Wars carts being Black at retail and Gray received when sent in for repair)
- (and I'm not sure of this even ever happening) A very early run of the game and they used a grey shell instead of a gold shell
- (and again, not sure if this has ever happened) A NFR Majora's Mask that was one of the first one's made and before they added the "Not For Resale!"

Thee only gray Majora's Mask, like Cristian said, is the Not for Resale, and it will say "Not For Resale!" on it, like in my avatar.
The PAL version is also Gold, so I know that's not it.

Unless actually seeing a high quality picture of that cart, or you seeing it in person and comparing the gloss of the label against another cartridge, it's kind of hard to tell what's going on with it.

If it does turn out to be an actual Majora's Mask that was made in a grey shell, and not a transplanted board with a repro label, it could be worth quite a bit, but it might be hard to tell if that is the case with this or not.

If you have a very keen eye and think that it looks legit even after a very close inspection, then I say buy it if it doesn't cost anymore than a normal copy of Majoras Mask. A word of warning though, every grey copy of MM that was not a NFR copy has been proven to be fake as far as I can remember.

I got a really good you tube video you should watch pertaining to this cart. If you can possiblly get a trial play of the game before you buy it, then you can see if you really have something of value here. If it is a demo cart (not to many were made) Then snatch this cart up quickly before someone else does. I would even take the chance on it even if you cant play it before ya buy it. Anyways check out this link, it will explain alot more.

You should buy it because its an awesome game. Who cares if its worth anything!

But ya, buy it if you can. May be something special. Hard to tell with the pic though.

The label's just been put on a grey cart. We've seen a few examples of this on eBay. Because the holo label is like a solid thing (instead of just a sticker), it's easy to shift it to another cart.

I wish things like this would just disappear and people would stop making them (even though there's almost certainly no ill intent on the creator's part).

Some more pics of mine.

So my thoughts on this. The cart I have has a 100% authentic sticker. The question is how'd it get there? The sticker is in perfect shape and in perfect position. I suppose someone could have gone through the trouble of finding a cart with the hologram, carefully removing it and then slapping it on a grey cart... but I can't see why. I have no indication of an old label being under this label or that this hologram has ever been removed. I bought mine from ebay. The seller was just some guy selling a bunch of N64 carts. He didn't list it as an OMG RAREZ cart. In fact he didn't even mention it being grey or rare, he didn't set the price higher then what they normally go for. I asked him about it after I bought it he said that it came to him that way. Part of me believes that if it wasn't shipped this way, that perhaps Nintendo themselves did this. As in the gold cart was damaged, someone sent it into Nintendo, and it was replaced with a grey cart... but who's to say for sure. Defiantly an interesting conversation piece.

I don't know what's up with the cart, but they did give out unused hologram labels. I can't remember what for, but I know I had an extra one when the game came out.

I have an unused Zelda Major'a Mask cart sticker.

However, if I put it onto a grey cart I think someone will notice.

Ahh mine came from a Nintendo employee.  I've always wanted to create an extra large cartridge to put it on.

Lmao that could totally work if you could find an empty prototype cart shell
