Letsencrypt is free for anyone to use, and very, very simple. If people care about security, there is really no excuse. The company I work for use it for the ~ten thousand professional websites they are hosting, and there have been zero issues.
That said, I don't personally see the big need for encryption on what is essentially a video game chat.
However, some people might use passwords for their account that are shared betwen other more critical services. That could be an issue, and a reason to address it.
Also, it's only a question of time before major browsers like Chrome are going to start warning people before they enter
any website that isn't HTTPS.
