whats a good old american dollar worth these days

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

A bag of dried beans, a gallon of clean water from your faucet and a handful of generic vitamins.

Still worth enough to get you through the day and have a good prospect for tomorrow.

Actually, the US Dollar has rebounded against everything but the Yen. The dollar is actually at a one year high against the Euro.

Hm...98 copper pennies, eh?  I'd almost be tempted to take you up on that:  it takes 154 copper pennies to equal one pound of copper.  Copper's spot price today finished up at $2.483/pound (down 22.2ยข from Friday's close).

^^^ If you're going to commoditize loose change, you'd be better off dealing in nickels since copper pennies are harder to find and have more numismatic value.

No, I think mb#### is talking about pre-1982 copper pennies.
You'll get them occasionally, but almost 100% of them have been taken out of circulation.

The cupro-nickel alloy in nickels hasn't changed in forever, though, so they have a much more valuable melt content per denomination than any other coinage.

If you do get actual copper pennies that don't look like ass, you can sell them on eBay to dumbass coin collectors who don't understand that it's far better to possess intrinsic value than numismatic value once the shit hits the fan.

Dan - I stand corrected...Fitty may never have even seen a pre-1982 penny

Fitty - pennies made pre-1982 are actually solid copper and worth considerably more in melt value than current pennies that are mostly zinc and only have a copper skin.

Well not "solid" in melt terms, I think it's 90/10, although I forget what the other 10 is offhand. I'm pretty sure it's not zinc though, that's a recent thing. Same as silver coins, they're usually 90/10 silver/nickel or some other crap. In the coin biz, they're good enough to be called "silver coins" or "copper coins" though.
