the other 10% would be nickel. Almost all US coinage is some sort of cupro-nickel alloy.

The silver coins were 90% silver, 10% nickel.

Well, they are silver coins. Higher percentages of precious metal are generally only found in bullion.

The pennies made from 1865-1982 (and roughly half that were made in 1982, btw) were 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc. No nickel was harmed in the making of any pennies (or at least the metal of which they're made) made since the Civil War (earlier Indian Head pennies were made of copper-nickel). Most US silver coins made from 1858-1964 were 90% silver and 10% copper, except for the nickels struck during WW II (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese).

Yes, btw...I'm a coin collector (in fact, I used to be pretty hardcore into coin collecting). I used to spend hours reading up on coins and such when I was a kid, and I still have many of my old books.

^^^ thanks for the clarification. I had assumed they used nickel for the color, since all the current stuff is cupro-nickel alloy.

No problem. Btw, what used to be silver back in 1964 and earlier (dimes, quarters, and halves; dollar coins from 1971-1999 also fall under this category, but halves from 1965-1970 do not) are currently made of layers of 79.1% copper and 20.9% nickel over a solid copper core .

yeah, because the copper core is cheaper than nickel throughout.

^^^ That doesn't sound like a bad deal assuming they aren't nasty or damaged.

It's about double the melt value, though. You should seriously go through them and start selling individual coins or sets of coins on eBay. There is absolutely no reason to just sit around on $15 worth of copper when, with some effort and luck, can turn into $100 worth of silver.

Wait, so do you have 2,000 wheat pennies or $2,000 in wheat pennies (which, would be 200,000 wheat pennies).

^ I would reiterate my comment to Fitty. Go through those pennies and sell them on eBay. Convert the proceeds into bullion.

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

nah, we have had them in the family for years.  My pappaw used to collect them, then my dad, then me and my brother.  I also have a giant barrel full of normal pennies as well.  I bet there is a couple hundred bucks worth in there.

That`s cool. I look for silver coins. Haven`t found ANYTHING. And my mom who works at a bank and rarely finds them.

And I found a error dime in my change once...I forgot to play the lottery though. The coin was 4 years old

^ The rest station/Welcome center in Chattanooga has a change machine that gives those out Jason. I had like 5 different ones when i made change for the vending machines.
I think its kinda along the line of the state quarters, like different presidents instead on the coin dollars though.
