Kratos fulfills the final wishes of his late wife, which was the end goal all along. Kratos and his son grow as their relationship changes greatly over the course of the adventure. That is the heart of the story and it was handled excellently.
Of course things get more complicated as more elements of Norse mythology are encountered, but they never overshadow that father/son story. It does set up some cool thing to explore in the second and third chapters of the new trilogy.
