The issue with StarCraft is you have to have your strategy down to the very seconds. Every second counts, and if you can't multitask and plan 4 steps in advance you are bound to lose. Also you have to memorize every unit and every possible strategy a person can be using and then know how to counteract it .
I only made it to silver myself.
Yeah, that's why I never made it very far in ranked either. When played at my preferred pace, I find RTS games to be fun and relaxing. Unfortunately that pace is way, WAY slower than needed to win. By the time I'd started creating troops, I'd already have enemy armies blowing up my base. I could have tried stepping up my game, but I knew it wouldn't be as fun to me as just playing a leisurely game against the CPU.
I can hardly imagine what it must be like for those competetive players who can manage like, what, 20 inputs per second or something crazy like that? It's like that Dr. Who episode: "Don't blink. Blink and you're dead."
