Glad I could get in a couple of attempts just under time. Still don't know how you guys can clear 225K+, this took everything I had (or, especially JD and Tom, WOW!).

Great week this week, everyone!

Attempt #6 - 208,500

-------------------------
My NES cartridge collection:  208/768 (27.08%)

Just got a 3DS - looking to start a DS/3DS collection. If you have any games you'd like to part with (preferably with case), PM me.

Nice score!  I knew my score would be in jeopardy soon enough

I got pretty lucky to get that far for that last run. I'll continue trying here and there, but not sure I can duplicate it, at least another 100k run.

Yeah, it's weird that they left out a floor on the Atari 800 DK barrel stage.  Never knew about the rivet trick.  That sounds like something I need to try!

Have you tried the trick yet? Let me know when you do.

I watched some of the Commodore 64 version of Forbidden Forest. It looks better in every way, but I prefer the victory dance music in the 800XL version.

So, I made several attempts at DK last night, and no dice. I've gotten very close to my previous score a few times but made stupid mistakes. The hardest stage for me is the rivets, with those flaming peeps chasing you down.

Ugh, got the same exact score as last time. It's those dang barrels. Sometimes they're placed in a way where it's almost impossible to jump over them.

Tell me about it. It's pure luck of the random sometimes. I think the game cheaps on purpose on occasion.

^ Yeah man. The easiest level is the elevator one. Once you figure out the pattern, it's a cakewalk.

I made a highlight/tips video of this game a while back.  Hope this helps everyone.

I haven't tried the trick.  Need to take the time to hook up the Atari, but haven't had it yet.  Will let you know!

And yes, the victory dance on Forbidden Forest is awesome!

If there are a bunch of barrels coming at you, make sure you stand to the side of the ladder. From what I've seen so far, if it looks like it's impossible to jump over, at least one of the barrels will go down the ladder so that you can jump over the rest.

Edit: Or just watch Tom's video. Thanks Tom!

The trick when the Barrels get crazy is to learn how to retreat to safety--- down both middle ladders. Otherwise, DK, will occasionally set you up a nice trap that you can't jump through. I.E 3 barrels in a row.

Or, the simpler strategy, is to just not grab any hammers, because the barrels usually don't go crazy if you don't grab them. --- Problem there is you give up alot of points.

Also, as Tonya and Tom have pointed out, Tom's video covers almost everything you will need to know. Everything else requires witchcraft and voodoo, and many nights of sacrifice, so I can't help with that

Also, great scores so far, don't give up, and keep em coming!

Big jump from my old score but I choked hard on 5-1. Really wanted to break 100,000 but soon enough I think I will.

EDIT: new score, old score 92,000

That's a tough thing to predict.  Usually you can count on 3 or 4 scores getting posted at the very end, I would try to be in the top half if possible.

Not sure how I feel about taking away points for someone trying to master the game in a week, as well as I don't have the time to do the grind of the contest every single week, so I might post up a score and request participation only.

We'll see if I can knock the rust off and get something done tonight.

Nice score Krunch!  You'll get it!

I remember when I was trying to get my first rollover, time after time, I'd get up in to high digits (using all my lives), and would choke on the Spring on the elevator board.   Twice even, I would have went over if I'd gotten that darn spring!  Ugg!

The break thru is always a good feeling.

No time for modesty JD. That game is your speciality, you're the guy to beat, and we want you to be as hard as you can to beat

I agree with that. If you put the time in to get good at the game you should be the one who wins. Nothing was stopping me from playing this game before. I just never did.

OK, fair enough!

If I were Las Vegas making odds however, I think Tom would probably be the favorite!, I usually suck most of the time, and occassionaly catch a break

First attempt
second attempt - went for the lower platform mid-right and missed. damnit.

64,800

Edit: this will be my final score for the week. My top loader needs to be sent out for repair, and my toaster is absolutely not cooperating today. Will be purchasing a new connector for that one I suppose. I'm not going to bother emulating either, this thread went somewhere I did not expect. GL everyone!

Sorry, ooki! I I usually can't break 100k, but I had a super luck miracle run. I gave up a lot of points timing the springs on 5-2 and luring the fireballs on 5-3.

Edit - My name is kind of flashed out, hope thats ok! Pic of my last score on the same paper:

I feel ya, just did marginally better myself (64k) and I missed the low-level and died the same way. I was still on L4 though, haven't made it to L5 yet, hadn't even played this port for at least 1.5 years prior to today..
