Hello everyone and welcome to 2015 NintendoAge Weekly Contests!  It’s time to start another year of great competition in the Weekly Contests and the first game of the year is truly a classic.  Some consider it the best game on the NES and one that has stood the test of time.  Of course I am talking about Super Mario Bros. 3.  But wait, there’s more.  If we can get 50 or more participants this week, I will give away a very special prize :
******** A CIB COPY OF DRA600N'S HOMEBREW GAME FIX IT FELIX JR *******

Let’s make this the biggest week the Weekly Contests have ever seen.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • 1 life only
  • You are not allowed to re-enter the Sky Tower in World 5
  • Participation score: 200,000 (you must score at least 200,000 points to receive a participation point for this week)
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Action/Platformer

The contest ends Sunday, 2/8/15 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

I was hoping for a low score contest. When we played this back in 2013 I beat the game on one life with a score of 160k.

So straight highest score, not furthest progression and highest score. What about whistles? Can we skip around the map? What about repeating a world?

I was kind of hoping this was some sort of limited challenge, not the whole game. SMB games aren't great contestants for high-scoring contests, but whatever. I'm game, I just won't be putting much effort into it.

Low score doesn't work well for this game, the clock gives too much points.

Replaying a world by using the whistle is forbidden.

200,000 points is really nothing, you guys can make tons of points with one life!

Really nothing? ... I've never even beat the first world, on as many life's as you get. Participation is going to be a struggle this week, xD. Good luck everyone.

Guill is right, low score is bunk for this game because of the timer. A progression/high score would have worked too but this is fine. I'm terrible at World 3 so I'm just gonna focus on doing awesome for the first two worlds.

Yes that's correct, once you die you stop and record your score. It's smart to keep going afterwards to get some practice, though. Congrats on the first score of the year (Edit) bearcat-doug!

You guys are right, once you die, you take a picture of your score

Couldn't agree more with Krunch, once you died, do not restart over instantly, keep on playing to get used to later stages so you know what's coming up next time. As long as you don't fall into pits, you can survive quite long with one life in this game if you keep getting the powerups that are everywhere.

Use the clock in your advantage, there's some stages where you can make a lot of points, and there's a lot of loophole in stages to take advantage of.

I wouldn't call it easy, but at least I got a qualifying score in.

my guess is since it is "one-life only" that the timer creates the necessary scoring limitation and you should absolutely point rack until it almost runs out.

Finally a game I'm good enough at that I can partake in this contest! I'm practicing now but I'll post my best score later in the week. 200,000 points is not hard at all.

I really screwed up there and didn't have enough speed to clear that jump. Paused and took the picture right before I died. Stupid death. It was pretty tough to get my tv and cell phone camera to cooperate.

That's a nice score for 1 level away from the second castle. I made it to the castle and wasn't even close to that.

I know, but where? Or is racking even allowed?
